Chapter 2 - The Morning After

The bright morning sun streamed through the crystal chandeliers of Sterling Manor, illuminating a scene of triumphant luxury.
Andrew stood in front of the full-length mirror in his master suite, adjusting a silk bowtie. On the bed lay several velvet boxes containing diamond bracelets he had purchased that morning using his business credit card.
Beside him, Brenda twirled in a magnificent white lace dress—a gown she had dragged out of Mariana’s closet and had altered to fit her within hours of Mariana’s departure.
“I still can’t believe how easy it was,” Brenda giggled, leaning over to kiss Andrew’s jaw. “She actually walked out into the dark like a beaten dog. Did you see her face, Andrew? She really thought she was someone important!”
Andrew laughed, admiring his reflection. “She was an orphan rescued by my family’s generosity, Brenda. People like her don’t know how to handle real status. She was getting arrogant. Hitting her was necessary to remind her of her place.”
The door burst open, and Margaret walked in, holding a glass of vintage champagne. Her eyes were bright with triumph.
“The caterers are here, darling!” Margaret announced cheerfully. “The floral arrangements cost fifty thousand dollars, but who cares? Tonight, when the Escalante Group representatives arrive to sign the mega-merger contract, our family will officially enter the billionaire class!”
“Did the bank confirm the transfer for the party expenses?” Andrew asked casually, pouring himself a drink.
“Oh, my card had a tiny glitch this morning, sweetie,” Margaret said, waving her hand dismissively. “The automated system said something about a temporary audit hold. I just told them to bill it directly to Sterling Logistics’ corporate account. You know how these banking systems are on weekends.”
Andrew frowned slightly, pulling out his phone. He opened his banking app to check the corporate balance.
An error screen popped up: [ACCOUNT SUSPENDED — CONTACT ACCOUNT HOLDER IMMEDIATELY]
Andrew chuckled nervously. “Glitch in the software. I’ll call my financial director after the press briefing.”
Downstairs, the grand ballroom was already filling up with the city’s high society. Wealthy investors, corrupt politicians, socialites, and reporters from major business networks strolled through the marble halls, sipping champagne and admiring the opulent art.
Andrew walked down the grand staircase like a king, with Brenda on his arm and Margaret flanking his right. The crowd clapped enthusiastically.
Andrew stepped up to the gold-plated podium, tapping the microphone.
“Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests,” Andrew began, his voice dripping with charisma. “Thank you for joining us today at Sterling Manor. Today marks a historic turning point. My company, Sterling Logistics, is announcing a landmark $500 million partnership with the Escalante Group!”
The room burst into applause. Flashbulbs went off rapidly.
“As many of you know,” Andrew continued, taking Brenda’s hand, “there have been some recent... personnel changes in my personal life. I have finally separated from my former wife, a woman who proved incapable of rising to the standards of this family.”
Mocking chuckles echoed through the front row from Margaret’s wealthy friends.
“Today,” Andrew proclaimed loudly, “I introduce you to the true lady of this estate—Brenda!”
Brenda beamed, waving at the cameras like royalty.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the main entrance of the mansion swung open with a loud THUD.
A hush fell over the room as a squad of seven men in dark charcoal suits, led by two armed sheriff’s deputies, marched into the ballroom.
Andrew’s smile faltered. “What is the meaning of this? This is a private event!”
The lead sheriff stepped forward, pulling a stack of legal documents from his jacket. “Andrew Sterling?”
“Yes, I am Andrew Sterling!” Andrew snapped, stepping down from the stage. “Who gave you permission to interrupt my press conference?”
“Mr. Sterling, I am serving you with an immediate eviction order for this property,” the sheriff said loudly, his voice echoing off the high marble walls so every guest could hear. “Furthermore, we are executing a court order to seize all movable assets, vehicles, and luxury items on these premises.”
The crowd gasped. Reporters immediately turned their cameras toward the sheriff.
Margaret rushed forward, her glass shaking in her hand. “Are you insane?! This is Sterling Manor! My family has lived here for four years!”
“Ma’am, this property is owned entirely by Aegis Real Estate Holding,” the sheriff replied coldly. “And as of midnight, the owner has terminated your lease due to non-payment and structural breach.”
Andrew turned red with rage. “Aegis? I pay rent to Aegis! Who is the owner? Call them right now! This is a mistake!”
The sheriff stepped aside.
From behind the officers, a woman stepped into the light of the chandeliers.
She wasn't wearing the cheap, practical clothes they had forced her to wear for four years. She wore an emerald-green silk tailored suit that matched the cold, deadly glint in her eyes. Her dark hair was styled to perfection, and around her neck sat a diamond choker worth more than the entire mansion.
Andrew’s breath hitched. Brenda stumbled backward. Margaret dropped her champagne glass, letting it shatter against the floor.
“Mariana?” Andrew stammered, staring at her in sheer disbelief. “What... what kind of joke is this? How did you get in here? Who dressed you in that?”
Mariana walked slowly toward the podium, her heels clicking against the marble like a countdown to execution. She didn't look like a defeated wife. She looked like an empress walking through conquered territory.
“It’s no joke, Andrew,” Mariana said, her voice smooth, calm, and terrifyingly clear. “You wanted to know who owns Aegis Real Estate? You wanted to know who owns your trucks, your offices, your accounts, and your life?”

She stopped right in front of him, leaning in slightly.
“You’re looking at her.”
