Chapter 3 - The Unraveling

A deafening silence enveloped the ballroom. The flashing of press cameras became frantic, capturing every second of Andrew’s crumbling expression.
“You’re lying!” Margaret shrieked, pointing a trembling, diamond-encrusted finger at Mariana. “You were an orphan! A nobody! My son rescued you from poverty! Show her out, Sheriff! Drag this lying gold-digger out of my house!”
Mariana didn’t even glance at Margaret. She raised her hand slightly, and Julian Vance stepped forward, opening a thick black briefcase. He pulled out a stack of certified legal deeds and handed them directly to the lead news reporter standing in the front row.
“Read page three aloud, please,” Julian said calmly.
The reporter stammered, looking at the official state seal on the document. “‘Aegis Real Estate Holding Corporation... sole proprietor and 100% shareholder: Mariana Escalante-Sterling.’” The reporter paused, his eyes widening. “‘Escalante Group Subsidiary.’”
The room exploded into chaos.
“Escalante?!” an investor in the crowd shouted. “She’s an Escalante?!”
“Andrew, what is the meaning of this? You told us you were signing a deal with the Escalantes!” another board member yelled, pushing his way through the crowd.
Andrew felt the room spinning. His chest burned, his throat dry as bone. “No... no, no, no! Her name is Mariana Vance! She’s a nobody! Her father was a deadbeat!”
“My father is Arthur Escalante,” Mariana said coldly, stepping up to the podium and taking the microphone directly from Andrew’s frozen hand.
She turned to face the cameras and the stunned crowd of elite guests.
“Four years ago, I married Andrew Sterling under an assumed identity because I believed he loved me for who I was,” Mariana spoke clearly into the microphone. “I wanted a simple life away from my family’s wealth. I used my personal wealth to secretly clean his company’s debt. I bought this mansion through my holding firm and let his family live here rent-free. I funded his lifestyle, paid his mother’s credit card bills, and secured his business contracts.”
She turned her gaze slowly toward Andrew, whose face was completely drained of color.
“And last night,” Mariana continued, her voice cutting through the room like a blade, “when I asked why money was missing from our private accounts, my husband struck me across the face in front of his mistress and his mother, demanding that I kneel and crawl out of this house.”
A collective gasp of horror rippled through the ballroom.
“That’s a lie!” Brenda screamed, stepping forward, her eyes wide with panic. “She stole Mrs. Sterling’s emerald necklace! She’s a thief!”
Mariana smiled softly. She nodded to Julian.
Julian pressed a button on his remote. Instantly, the massive LED screens behind the stage—screens that were supposed to show Andrew’s company presentation—switched to a high-definition video feed.
The video played in crystal-clear audio and video:
First video clip: Margaret Sterling handing the velvet jewelry box to an appraiser on 5th Avenue, laughing as she accepted a check for $350,000 to cover her casino debts, with Brenda standing beside her taking a cut.
Second video clip: The front foyer of the mansion from last night. Andrew raising his hand and violently slapping Mariana across the face while Brenda clung to his arm and Margaret smiled.
The ballroom erupted into sheer outrage.
Reporters began furiously typing on their phones. Investors stormed toward Andrew, shouting curses.
“You hit her?!” an elderly board member barked at Andrew. “You hit Arthur Escalante’s daughter?! Are you insane? Our stock is going to zero!”
“Wait! Please! Let me explain!” Andrew pleaded, his voice cracking as he reached out to grab Mariana’s arm. “Mariana! Baby! I didn’t know! I swear I didn’t know you were an Escalante! I was stressed! My mother pushed me! It was Brenda’s idea!”
“My idea?!” Brenda shrieked, slapping Andrew’s shoulder. “You told me she was a servant! You told me you were going to throw her out so we could get married!”
“Shut up, you leech!” Margaret screamed at Brenda, grabbing her hair. “You ruined my son!”
Within seconds, Andrew’s mother and mistress were clawing at each other in front of fifty news cameras, screaming obscenities in their ruined designer gowns.
Mariana watched the pathetic spectacle for a single second before turning her back on them.
“Sheriff,” Mariana said softly. “Clear my house.”
“With pleasure, Miss Escalante,” the sheriff replied. He gestured to his deputies. “All right, party’s over! Everyone out! Mr. Sterling, Mrs. Sterling, Miss Bennett—you have ten minutes to grab your personal items. Anything purchased with company funds stays.”
“No! You can’t do this!” Andrew screamed as two deputies grabbed his arms, pinning him against the gold podium. “Mariana! Please! I love you! Look at me! We’re married!”
Mariana stopped near the grand oak doors. She turned her head slightly, meeting his terrified, weeping eyes.

“Remember what I told you last night, Andrew?” Mariana whispered, her voice echoing over his desperate cries. “I told you that tomorrow morning, you would be on your knees.”
She walked out into the bright afternoon sun, leaving him to sink into the abyss he had dug for himself.
