Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

The day of the court hearing was a humid, stifling Tuesday. Eric looked different. The expensive suits he used to wear were gone, replaced by a cheap, ill-fitting blazer. His mother wasn't there; she had retreated to a vacation home, refusing to be associated with her son’s failure.
Maya stood before the judge, feeling smaller than the room, but larger than the man sitting across from her.
"Mr. Miller," the judge said, his voice echoing in the courtroom. "You have been accused of repeated harassment, violation of a restraining order, and domestic assault. Do you have anything to say?"
Eric looked at Maya, his eyes desperate, hoping to catch a flicker of the woman who used to forgive him. He didn't find her. He found a stranger—a woman who had reclaimed her own life.
"It was all a misunderstanding," Eric started, his voice cracking. "She’s lying about the money. She’s—"
"Enough," the judge interrupted. "The evidence provided by the plaintiff is comprehensive. Your history of financial abuse, your documented attempts to stalk the plaintiff, and the assault charges are verified."

The hammer fell. It wasn't the sound of broken glass; it was the sound of a finality. Eric was ordered to pay back every cent he had siphoned from their shared accounts, sentenced to six months of jail time for violating the protective order, and required to attend a mandatory batterer’s intervention program.
As the bailiffs led him away, he didn't scream. He didn't fight. He just looked at the floor, finally realizing that the woman he thought he owned had not only escaped—she had outplayed him at his own game.
