Chapter 2 - The House of Cards
The knock on the door was not from a delivery driver or a neighbor curious about the commotion. It was the rhythmic, authoritative strike of two uniformed officers. When Maya opened the door, the contrast between the chaos inside and the cold professionalism of the law was jarring. Eric’s mother, sensing that the game had shifted from a domestic spat to a legal entanglement, immediately began to soften her stance.
"Officer, there’s been a terrible misunderstanding," she started, her voice turning into that syrupy, manipulative tone she used to trick bank managers. "My son is a hard worker, and Maya here has been under a lot of stress. We’re just a family going through a rough patch."
Maya didn’t wait for the officers to ask questions. She stepped out into the hallway, the cool air feeling like salvation. "I am the victim of domestic violence," she said, her voice unwavering. "I have photographic evidence of the physical damage and witness testimony of the verbal abuse. I am not going back into that apartment."
The lead officer looked at Eric, who was now standing by the kitchen island, his face pale. "Sir, I need you to stay where you are."
Eric’s arrogance finally shattered. He looked at Maya, not with rage, but with a terrifying, pathetic desperation. "Maya, don't do this. We can talk about this. I’ll go to therapy. Just tell them you tripped."

"I didn't trip, Eric," Maya said, her voice devoid of the fear that had kept her silent for three years. "I was pushed. And I’ve been paying the bills on this place while you spent your days pretending to be a CEO on LinkedIn. The lease is in my name, the bank accounts are linked to my salary, and starting tonight, you’re a stranger."
As the officers moved in to take Eric's statement, Maya didn’t look back. She walked toward the elevator, her heart racing not with panic, but with the sudden, intoxicating rush of freedom. She had nowhere to go, but for the first time in years, she didn't care. She was the one who had finally dismantled the cage.
