Chapter 3 - The Library of Lies

The library was a tomb of mahogany and secrets. Rosa was left waiting under the watchful eye of a junior guard, but her mind was racing. She had spent five years in this house, scrubbing floors and folding linens, believing that the Whitmores were untouchable gods. Now, she realized they were just desperate people in expensive clothing.

Nathaniel Whitmore burst into the room at 9:00 p.m. He was a man made of sharp angles and cold charisma, his presence sucking the oxygen out of the room. Behind him followed Vivian, who was already sobbing—a perfect, performative display of grief.

"Nathaniel, thank God you're here," Vivian wailed, clinging to his arm. "That woman, Rosa—she caused such a scene. And the child… she’s been coached. Someone must have gotten to her."

Nathaniel didn't speak. He looked at the security footage being displayed on a tablet held by Arthur. He watched the grainy, high-contrast video of the hallway. He saw Vivian approaching Margaret. He saw the way she positioned herself behind the older woman. Then, the video glitched. A sudden, unexplained jump in time.

"The footage has been edited," Nathaniel said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. He looked at Rosa, his eyes piercing. "Rosa, tell me exactly what you saw before you arrived at the stairs."

"I was in the laundry room, sir," Rosa started, her voice steady despite the adrenaline. "But I heard the crash. And before that... I heard a conversation. A heated one."

"Liar!" Vivian shrieked.

Nathaniel raised a hand, silencing her instantly. "Continue."

"I heard Ms. Cole saying that the 'old woman's time had run out' and that the 'trust fund would be released upon her departure.' I didn't think anything of it until I saw her standing over Mrs. Whitmore’s body, already crafting the story of me pushing her."

Nathaniel turned to Vivian. The shift in his expression was terrifying. He didn't yell; he didn't even look angry. He looked at her as if she were a piece of garbage that had been tracked into his pristine home. "The trust, Vivian? You were worried about the trust?"

"It’s not what it sounds like!" Vivian stammered, her knees beginning to buckle. "I love you, Nathaniel! I did this for us! For our future!"

"My mother is in critical condition," Nathaniel said, stepping toward her. "And you have been planning her exit as if she were a stock option."

He signaled to the security team. "Escort Ms. Cole to the east wing. Secure the doors. She is not to leave until the police arrive."
