Chapter 3 - The Trial in the Shadows

The morning sun had barely cleared the skyscrapers of Santa Fe when the tabloid headlines hit the internet.
"EXTORTION AT THE MANSION: BILLIONAIRE DIEGO VILLASEÑOR TARGETED BY HOUSEMAID IN FALSE PATERNITY SCANDAL!"
The articles were vicious, detailed, and completely fabricated. They claimed that Marisol was a professional scam artist who had targeted wealthy businessmen in Mexico City, using a child to fabricate paternity claims for financial gain. Photos of Marisol carrying trash bags out of the mansion—taken out of context by paparazzi—were splashed across the front pages of major gossip magazines.
Inside the mansion, Diego slammed his tablet onto the dining table, shattering his glass of juice.
"Trace the IP addresses of those press releases!" Diego roared into his phone at his head of public relations. "I want lawsuits filed against every single news outlet publishing these lies by noon!"
"Diego, sir," his PR director responded nervously over the speakerphone. "It's not just the tabloids. Your mother, Doña Teresa, just held an impromptu press conference outside the Villaseñor Corporate Headquarters. She publicly announced that the family is taking legal measures to protect your estate from extortion."
Marisol, who was feeding Valentina oatmeal at the breakfast table, froze. She felt a cold wave of horror wash over her body.
"Mama?" Valentina asked innocently, touching Marisol’s hand. "Why are you sad?"
"I'm not sad, my love," Marisol forced a gentle smile, kissing the child's cheek. "Eat your breakfast."
Diego walked over to Marisol, his expression full of fierce determination. "Stay inside the mansion today. The gates are locked, and security will not let anyone in without my explicit permission. I am going to the corporate office to put an end to my mother's circus."
"Diego, please be careful," Marisol pleaded, grabbing his forearm. "Your mother is powerful. She has connections everywhere."
"So do I," Diego replied coldly.
However, Doña Teresa was three steps ahead.
An hour after Diego left for his office, a fleet of three black SUVs pulled up to the front gates of the Villaseñor mansion. Two men in dark suits stepped out, accompanied by an official from the Child Protective Services of Mexico City and a legal team carrying court orders.
Carlos, the head of private security at the gates, refused to open the entrance. "I have strict orders from Mr. Villaseñor! No one enters!"
The official held up a signed document against the glass of the guard booth. "This is a judicial order issued by the Family Court of the Federal District. We have received an emergency report alleging child endangerment and illegal confinement of a minor. If you do not open these gates immediately, federal marshals will breach the perimeter, and you will be arrested for obstruction of justice!"
Inside the mansion, the house phone rang frantically. Marisol answered it on the second ring.
"Marisol!" Carlos’s voice panicked over the line. "They have a court order from a family judge! They are threatening to break down the gates! You need to take Valentina and hide in the panic room behind the library!"
Marisol’s heart stopped. "A court order?! Who is out there?!"
"It’s Doña Teresa’s lawyers and Child Protective Services!"
Marisol didn't hesitate. She grabbed Valentina, pulling her into her arms, and ran down the grand hallway toward the library. The little girl clutched her stuffed rabbit, confused by the sudden terror in her mother's eyes.
Outside, the heavy iron gates groaned as a security vehicle pulled them open under legal threat. The black SUVs sped up the long driveway, tires screeching on the gravel.
Door handles rattled down the main floor of the mansion.
Marisol reached the library, her fingers frantically pressing the secret code into the keypad hidden behind a leather-bound book on the third shelf. The wooden paneling slid open with a soft hiss, revealing a small, reinforced panic room equipped with emergency communications and monitors.
She slipped inside with Valentina, pressing the lock button. The heavy steel door sealed shut just as footsteps thundered into the library outside.
Through the closed-circuit security camera monitor inside the panic room, Marisol watched in horror as Doña Teresa stepped into the library, flanked by two police officers and a stern-looking female social worker.

"Find the child!" Doña Teresa commanded, her voice amplified through the library’s security mic. "Check every room! That woman is unstable and holding a minor illegally!"
Inside the air-conditioned panic room, Marisol pulled Valentina close to her chest, whispering prayers into her hair, while reaching for the emergency satellite phone mounted on the wall to dial Diego’s direct line.
