Chapter 2 - The Snake's Venom

By nightfall, the quiet sanctuary of the Villaseñor mansion had turned into the epicenter of a high-society scandal.

Diego had immediately transferred Marisol and Valentina from the cramped maid's quarters into the master guest suite on the second floor—a sunlit room overlooking the private gardens. He ordered his personal chef to prepare dinner for them and called his private pediatrician to conduct a thorough medical checkup for Valentina.

However, while peace reigned upstairs, a storm was brewing across Mexico City.

In the opulent drawing room of the Robles estate in Polanco, Paulina sat sipping brandy while her mother, Doña Victoria Robles, paced back and forth across the hardwood floor. Sitting across from them was Doña Teresa Villaseñor—Diego’s formidable, proud mother.

"This is an absolute disgrace, Teresa!" Doña Victoria barked, throwing her hands in the air. "Your son threw my daughter out onto the street for a peasant maid and her illegitimate brat! Our family name is being dragged through the dirt on social media!"

Doña Teresa, dressed in impeccably tailored silk, set her fine porcelain tea cup down with a sharp click. Her face was a mask of cold fury.

"Calm yourself, Victoria," Teresa said evenly. "Diego is acting out of foolish sentimentality. I knew about that girl four years ago, and I dealt with her then. I will deal with her again now."

Paulina leaned forward, her eyes bloodshot with rage. "You knew about her? Why didn't you tell me she was living in his house as a maid?!"

"Because I assumed she had enough sense to stay hidden," Teresa replied sharply. "I hired my former attorney, Licenciado Morales, to offer her money to disappear four years ago. It seems she took the money and played the long game, waiting for the right moment to re-enter Diego's life."

"She claims she never took the money!" Paulina spat. "She claims your lawyer threatened her!"

Teresa’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Whatever she claims is irrelevant. Diego cannot marry a domestic servant, nor can he acknowledge a child of unknown lineage as the heir to the Villaseñor fortune. It would ruin our standing in Santa Fe and collapse our corporate merger with your family's construction empire."

"So what are we going to do?" Paulina asked, her knuckles turning white around her glass. "Diego blocked my number. He posted armed guards at the mansion gates!"

Teresa smiled—a cold, calculated smile that held no human warmth.

"Diego relies on his public image and his board of directors," Teresa explained smoothly. "Tomorrow morning, we will launch a full-scale media campaign. We will leak stories to the press claiming that a former employee is attempting to extort the Villaseñor family with a fraudulent paternity claim. Simultaneously, I will file for emergency legal custody of the child under the premise that the mother is unfit, broke, and mentally unstable."

"And the DNA test?" Paulina asked eagerly. "What if Diego orders a paternity test?"

"My contacts at the private diagnostic labs in Lomas de Chapultepec owe me many favors," Teresa said, taking a slow sip of her tea. "The results will show whatever we need them to show. By the end of the week, that girl will be facing extortion charges, the child will be placed in a state facility, and Diego will come crawling back to you, Paulina."

Meanwhile, back at the mansion, Diego sat in his private study, staring out the floor-to-ceiling windows into the dark gardens.

A knock sounded at the door. Marisol stepped inside, wearing a simple, soft sweater that Diego had ordered for her earlier that evening. She looked exhausted, her dark eyes filled with lingering anxiety.

"Valentina is asleep," Marisol said softly, staying near the doorway.

Diego turned around, stepping toward her. "Marisol... please, sit down."

She hesitated before sitting on the edge of a leather armchair. Diego took the seat opposite her, looking deeply into her eyes.

"I called my legal team three hours ago," Diego revealed. "I’ve instructed them to draft a formal acknowledgment of paternity for Valentina. I want to give her my last name immediately."

Marisol gasped, covering her mouth with her hands. "Diego... you don't have to do that so quickly. Your family... the news... it will ruin your business!"

"I don't care about the business, Marisol!" Diego declared passionately, leaning forward to take her trembling hands in his. "I lost four years of my daughter's life because of lies and fear. I spent four years looking at you in my hallway, feeling this unexplainable ache in my heart, never realizing that the love of my life and my child were right in front of me!"

Marisol’s eyes filled with tears again. "Diego... your mother... she will never accept this."

"My mother doesn't rule my life anymore," Diego said firmly, pressing his lips against her knuckles. "I swear to you, Marisol, no one will ever hurt you or Valentina again. You are safe now."

Neither of them knew that outside the gates of the mansion, an unmarked black car was parked in the shadows, its long telephoto lens pointed directly at the second-floor windows.
