Chapter 6 - The Beautiful Beginning

Two weeks later, the chaos had died down. The legal battle was long and arduous, but with the evidence I provided, the courts moved quickly. The stolen funds were recovered, and Celeste was facing years behind bars for fraud and conspiracy. The socialites who had toasted them now acted as if they never knew the pair existed.

I sat in my new home—a quiet, sun-drenched house by the lake—holding my daughter. The sunlight touched her face, and she let out a tiny, contented sigh. She was safe. We were safe. She was the best thing that had ever happened to me, a beautiful, living proof that my strength could overcome his cruelty.

I had been offered a high-level executive position at Mr. Sterling’s firm, which I accepted on my own terms. I was no longer the woman who was defined by her husband’s cruelty or her perceived "infertility." I was a mother, a survivor, and a woman who had fought for her own justice.

My phone rang. It was a lawyer, letting me know that Adrian had requested a visit from prison, a desperate plea for leniency, a chance to see the girl he had only seen in a photograph. He was begging for a connection to the life he had destroyed.

I looked at my daughter, her tiny hand wrapped around my finger, her eyes wide and innocent. I thought about the man he was, and the man he could never be. He didn't deserve a seat at our table.

"Tell him no," I said firmly, my voice filled with finality. "My daughter has no father who treats people like pawns. My daughter has a legacy of strength, and that is enough. Tell him he doesn't exist to us."

I hung up the phone and walked out into the garden. The air was fresh and clear, smelling of pine and possibility. The past was locked away, and the future was entirely mine to write. I watched my daughter sleep in her stroller, dreaming of a life she would never know was built on a lie. For the first time, everything was exactly as it should be. The story of my life hadn't ended with his betrayal; it had only just begun with my liberation.
