Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Kingdom

The police arrived shortly after. Mr. Sterling had personally made the call, his face grim. The theft of the inheritance was a major felony, and the paper trail I had meticulously built was bulletproof. As the officers approached the head table, the "happy couple" dissolved into a pathetic display of cowardice.

Celeste, realizing she was going down, turned on Adrian immediately, her voice shrill. "He told me it was his money! He told me he was divorced and that the money was his to take! I didn't know anything about a trust!"

"You lying snake!" Adrian lunged at her, his composure completely shattered, only to be tackled by the security he had hired for his own protection. The irony was poetic—he was being held down by the very people he paid to keep his secrets safe.

The scene was absolute chaos. The guests were filming, phones out, recording the downfall of the town's golden couple. I stood in the center of the storm, perfectly still, a silent observer of the wreckage. I watched as they handcuffed Adrian—the man who once made me feel worthless—and dragged him away from the expensive venue he could no longer afford.

I didn't feel joy. I felt a profound, deep sense of release. The heavy weight I had been carrying for months—the fear, the isolation, the shame—simply evaporated. As they took him out the back exit, he locked eyes with me. For the first time, he didn't look arrogant. He looked small. He looked defeated. He knew he hadn't just lost his marriage; he had lost his future, his reputation, and the only child he had ever been given.
