Chapter 3 - The Tangled Web of Greed

The reception was a theater of lies. I spent the hour moving through the room, making calculated small talk with the sponsors listed in the documents. It turned out, the company sponsoring this lavish wedding was a shell corporation—"C&A Holdings." It was a vehicle for laundering the funds they had embezzled from my grandmother's trust.
I leaned into a conversation with the CEO of a rival firm, Mr. Sterling. He was a man known for his ruthlessness in business and his low tolerance for fraud. "It’s a bold choice to sponsor this union, isn't it, Mr. Sterling? Given the questionable source of the capital for their initial venture?"
Mr. Sterling looked intrigued, his glass paused at his lips. "What do you mean, Mia? Everyone says this company is the next big thing."
"The inheritance money that 'vanished' from the Carter estate last year," I whispered, opening my clutch just enough to let him see the header of a bank statement. "It seems the money wasn't invested in a startup. It was used to buy the very luxury they are flaunting tonight. Every diamond, every bottle of champagne, every guest's plate... it's all built on stolen history."
The look on his face shifted from politeness to sharp interest. He was a man who hated being duped, and he was a major investor in the industry. He was exactly the ally I needed.
By the time I reached the head table, the room was buzzing with whispers. Adrian noticed the change in the atmosphere. The laughter had died down, replaced by suspicious glances. He grabbed my arm, his grip bruising, pulling me toward a shadowed corner. "What are you doing? Why are people looking at me like that? What did you say to Sterling?"
"People are finally seeing, Adrian," I said, my voice low and steady as I peeled his hand off my arm with deliberate slowness. "They’re seeing the man who stole from his wife and built a throne on a foundation of sand. Did you really think I’d let you get away with it? That I would just disappear into the night?"

"You're pathetic," he hissed, his face turning a deep, ugly red. "You’re just jealous. Celeste is giving me a son. You gave me nothing. You were always just a placeholder in my life."
I felt a surge of cold, calm strength. "You’re right, Adrian. I gave you nothing. I kept the truth for myself. And trust me, the truth is a debt you can't afford to pay."
