Chapter 4 - The Golden Gala of Deceit

The grand ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton was a sea of glittering diamonds, tailored tuxedos, and the soft clinking of crystal champagne flutes. Over three hundred of Chicago’s most influential business leaders, politicians, and socialites had gathered for the annual Winter Logistics Gala, an event my company anchored every year.
Patricia was in her absolute element. She wore a custom-designed, emerald-green gown that cost more than a teacher’s annual salary. She held my arm tightly, introducing herself to senators and tech CEOs as the future matriarch of the Vance estate.
"You look breathtaking tonight, my love," I whispered in her ear as we stood near the main stage.
"Everything is perfect, Arthur," she beamed, leaning her head against my shoulder. "I've already spoken to the event coordinator. They are ready for your keynote speech and our big announcement."
At 9:30 p.m., the ballroom lights dimmed, and the master of ceremonies took the microphone. "Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome our guest of honor, the Managing Director of Vance Global Logistics, Arthur Vance!"
The room erupted into applause as I walked up the steps to the stage. The massive, high-definition projection screen behind me—usually reserved for displaying corporate growth charts and international shipping routes—glowed with our company logo.
I stood behind the podium, adjusting the microphone. I looked out at the crowd, finding Patricia sitting at the front VIP table, looking up at me with an expression of smug triumph.
"Good evening, everyone," I began, my voice echoing powerfully through the hall. "Vance Global has always been a company built on a single, core value: absolute transparency. We track our shipments across oceans, through storms, ensuring that what we promise is exactly what we deliver. But tonight, I want to talk about a different kind of tracking. I want to talk about the security of legacy."
Patricia smiled, leaning forward, expecting me to pivot into a romantic speech about our upcoming marriage.
"When we bring new partners into our inner circle," I continued, my tone dropping into an icy, resonant register, "we must perform the ultimate due diligence. Because sometimes, a partner wears a mask so flawless, you don't realize you've invited a monster into your home."

A subtle rustle of confusion murmured through the crowd. Patricia’s smile faltered slightly.
"Marcus," I said, looking toward the tech booth. "Run the new data reel."
