Chapter 2 - The Silent Alliance

For the next forty-eight hours, I lived a double life inside my own home. I slept in a small, windowless monitoring room tucked behind the wine cellar, surviving on black coffee and a burning, icy rage. I watched through the digital lenses as Patricia systematically tried to break my daughters' spirits.

She made them eat their meals in the scullery rather than the grand dining room. She locked their playroom, claiming they hadn't earned the right to luxury. And through it all, Rosa was their silent savior. When Patricia slept or left for her expensive spa appointments, Rosa would sneak into the girls' bedrooms, bringing them warm milk, retrieving the confiscated stuffed rabbit, and whispering to them that their father would be home soon.

On the third night, at 2:15 a.m., I knew I had to make contact.

Using the service stairs, I slipped into the kitchen where Rosa was quietly washing the late-night dishes Patricia had left behind. The floorboards didn't make a sound beneath my sneakers. When I stepped into the dim light of the overhead stove, Rosa turned around, a gasp catching in her throat. She dropped a crystal glass, but I caught it before it hit the marble floor.

"Mr... Mr. Arthur?" she whispered, her eyes widening in sheer terror as she looked toward the hallway, terrified Patricia would appear. "What are you doing here? You're supposed to be in London!"

"Shh," I placed a finger against my lips, guiding her into the deep shadows of the walk-in pantry. "Rosa, listen to me very carefully. I never left. I know everything."

Tears instantly welled in the older woman’s eyes, rolling down her weathered cheeks. "You... you know?"

"I've watched every second on the security feeds," I said, my voice cracking with emotion as I gripped her shoulders. "I saw what she did to the girls. I saw how she threatened you. Rosa, I am so deeply sorry I ever doubted you. I let her poison my mind, and my daughters paid the price."

Rosa let out a ragged sob, covering her mouth to muffle the sound. "I didn't care about the threats to me, Arthur. But the girls... they were so vibrant before she arrived. She told them that if they complained to you, she would convince you to send them away to a strict boarding school in Switzerland and that they would never see you again."

May you like

A violent tremor of fury shook my hands, but I forced it down. "She won't be sending anyone anywhere. Rosa, I need you to play the part for just two more days. Tomorrow morning, I will 'return' from my business trip. I will act completely normal. I will treat Patricia like the queen she thinks she is. Can you do that for me? Can you help me keep the trap set?"

Rosa wiped her face, her posture straightening with a profound, maternal dignity. "For Martina and Daniela, I would walk through fire, sir. We will be ready."
