Chapter 1 - The Anatomy of a Mask

The monitor’s glow cast a cold, blue tint across the dark security room. I sat frozen, the leather chair beneath me suddenly feeling like a block of ice. My chest heaved as a lethal mixture of adrenaline and suffocating guilt flooded my veins.
On screen, Patricia stepped closer to Rosa, her face distorted into an expression of pure, aristocratic malice that I had never seen in our eighteen months of dating. She raised a single, manicured finger, thrusting it dangerously close to the nanny’s face.
"Let me make something completely clear to you, you pathetic peasant," Patricia hissed, the high-definition microphone capturing her voice with sickening clarity. "The wedding is in three months. The moment I sign those papers, your little reign in this house is over. I will have you fired, blacklisted, and if you ever breathe a word to Arthur about how I handle my future stepdaughters, I will make sure the police find enough missing jewelry in your locker to put you away for a decade."
Rosa didn't flinch. She kept her head lowered, but her body remained rigidly positioned as a human shield in front of Martina and Daniela. "Miss Patricia," Rosa whispered, her voice trembling but unbroken. "Mr. Arthur loves his daughters more than life itself. You cannot keep this cruelty hidden forever."
"Watch me," Patricia sneered, throwing her head back with a chilling laugh. "Arthur sees exactly what I want him to see. He’s a man driven by legacy and logic, and right now, his logic tells him that you are the thief. He’s thousands of miles away in the air right now, completely oblivious. By the time he returns, these little brats will know exactly who holds the leash in this mansion."
Beside me, my head of security, Marcus, let out a low, dangerous breath. His hand drifted toward his tactical belt. "Sir," he murmured, his eyes fixed on me. "Do you want me to send the team in? We can have her removed from the property in thirty seconds."
"No," I whispered, my voice sounding like ground glass. I stood up, staring at the screen where my youngest, Daniela, was silently crying, her face buried in her older sister’s shoulder. "If we kick her out now, her lawyers will call it a domestic dispute. She’ll spin a web of lies, claim she was just being a strict disciplinarian, and drag my daughters through a messy, public custody battle the moment we try to separate. No. She wanted to play a game of shadows. I am going to bury her in them."

I turned to Marcus, my eyes burning with a absolute, predatory focus. "We keep the cameras rolling. Every room, every angle, every audio feed. I want a fortress of undeniable evidence. And Marcus? Call my estate attorney, Lawrence. Tell him to halt the prenuptial finalization. We aren't canceling the wedding yet. We are going to let Patricia think she is winning right up until the floor drops out from beneath her feet."
I slipped out of the security room and into the hidden service corridors of my own home, feeling like a ghost haunting a house that had been stolen from him. I had built a global logistics empire worth hundreds of millions, yet I had failed to protect the two fragile souls that mattered most. That failure ended today.
