Chapter 9: The Midnight Rendezvous

The Director’s eyes narrowed into terrifying slits. "You are bluffing, Mrs. Evans. Marcus wasn't that smart."

"My husband was an accountant for assassins," Sarah shot back, her voice echoing off the muddy walls of the ravine. "He spent twelve years planning for this exact night. Do you really want to bet your entire syndicate on whether or not I'm bluffing?"

The operatives on the ridge looked toward the Director, waiting for the order to fire. The tension was a physical weight in the air.

Sarah pressed a button on the tablet. The screen lit up in the dark, displaying a massive, glowing red countdown timer.

UPLOAD COMMENCING IN: 04:59.

"Five minutes," Sarah yelled. "In five minutes, Aegis is exposed. Every politician you bought, every hit you ordered, blasted onto the front page of the internet. Tell your men to lower their weapons."

The Director stared at the countdown. For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.

"Stand down," the Director ordered her men, her voice tight with suppressed rage. The rifles lowered slightly. "What are your terms, Sarah?"

"First, you bring a medical transport van down to this road. Right now. We need heat and blankets."

"Done," the Director snapped her fingers at a subordinate, who immediately spoke into a radio.

"Second," Sarah continued, her heart pounding so hard she thought it might crack her ribs. "You bring my husband to the van. Alive."

"I told you, he is in custody at a secure facility," the Director sneered.

"Then you better make a very fast phone call," Sarah said coldly, looking at the timer. 03:45. "Because you have three and a half minutes before your empire burns to the ground."

"If I release him, you cancel the upload," the Director bargained.

"I cancel it when my family is safe and driving away," Sarah countered. "Call your facility. Now."

The Director pulled a satellite phone from her coat. She dialed a number, her eyes never leaving Sarah. "This is the Director. Bring the asset to coordinates point-bravo. Yes. Immediately."

Two minutes passed in agonizing silence. The rain beat down on them. Leo clung to Sarah, trembling.

Headlights cut through the trees at the top of the ridge. A black SUV pulled up alongside a heated medical transport van. The doors of the SUV opened, and two guards dragged out a figure in chains.

It was Mark.

He was bloodied, bruised, and limping, but he was alive. He looked down into the ravine and saw Sarah holding the glowing tablet.

"Sarah..." Mark gasped, his voice carrying over the wind.

"Let him go," Sarah demanded.

The Director nodded. The guards unlocked Mark's chains. He stumbled down the muddy slope, slipping and sliding until he crashed into Sarah and Leo.

"You're okay," Mark sobbed, wrapping his bloodied arms around them. "You're all okay."

"Cancel the upload, Sarah," the Director shouted from the ridge. 00:45 remained on the clock. "You have your husband. Honor the deal."

Sarah looked at Mark. He looked at the tablet, then up at the Director.

"Did you give her the drive?" Mark whispered to Sarah.

May you like

"No," Sarah whispered back. "I have it in my pocket."

Mark smiled, a bloody, exhausted, triumphant smile. "Good."
