Chapter 8: The Weight of a Promise

Sarah froze, trapped in the harsh glare of the spotlight. Operatives with rifles lined the ridge, aiming down at her and Leo.

The Director looked down at them with cold, clinical detachment. "Your father-in-law put up an admirable fight, Sarah. But loyalty is a rare commodity in my business. Hand over the drive, and I will let you and the children walk away. I have no quarrel with civilians."

"You're lying!" Leo screamed, clutching his baby sister. "You killed my dad!"

"Your father chose his path, young man," the Director said softly. "He stole classified intelligence. He knew the consequences."

"If I give you the drive, you'll kill us the second it's in your hands," Sarah yelled up the ravine. "It's the only thing keeping us alive!"

"Sarah, think logically," the Director sighed, checking a silver watch on her wrist. "You are standing in the mud in a hospital gown. You have no resources, no backup, and an infant that is going to freeze to death in ten minutes. I am offering you a way out. A new life. A clean slate."

Sarah looked down at Lily, whose lips were turning slightly blue in the freezing rain. The maternal desperation was a physical agony in her chest. She had to protect her children.

"Okay," Sarah choked out, her voice breaking. "Okay. If I give it to you... you let us go. You swear it."

"You have my word," the Director smiled.

"No, Mom!" Leo cried, grabbing her arm. "Dad said not to give it to them! He said to give it to the press!"

"Leo, there is no press here," Sarah whispered, tears mixing with the rain on her face. "There's only us. And I have to keep you alive."

Sarah slowly reached into her pocket. Her fingers brushed against the silver hard drive. But as she touched it, she felt something else. In the dark of the lockbox, she hadn't just grabbed the drive. She had grabbed the tablet, too.

A memory flashed in her mind. Mark's video. Trust no one. Especially not the doctors.

The man in the hospital who chased them had worn a doctor's coat. He had tried to get the tablet. Why did they care so much about the tablet if the ledger was at the cabin?

Sarah pulled her hand out of her pocket, holding the tablet high in the air.

"You don't want the drive," Sarah yelled, staring directly at the Director. "You want this."

The Director's smile instantly vanished. Her pristine composure cracked. "Put the device down, Sarah."

"Why?" Sarah challenged, her mind racing, piecing the puzzle together in real-time. "The drive is old news. But this tablet... Mark didn't just send me a video. He set up a dead man's switch. Didn't he?"

The silence from the ridge was deafening.

"He synced the ledger to the cloud," Sarah realized, the power suddenly shifting back to her. "And this tablet is the only thing that can cancel the upload. If you kill us, if this tablet dies... the ledger goes public to every major news outlet in the world."
