Chapter 10: The Echo of a Lie
"Cancel it!" the Director screamed, losing all composure as the timer ticked down to 00:20.
Sarah looked at the screen. Her thumb hovered over the glowing red 'CANCEL' button. She looked at the woman on the ridge, the woman who had orchestrated the murder of countless people, who had hunted her family like animals, who would undoubtedly hunt them again the second they dropped their guard.
"Mom?" Leo asked, looking up at her.
Sarah looked at Mark. He gave her a single, resolute nod.
Sarah looked back up at the Director. And she lowered the tablet.
"No!" the Director shrieked. "Fire! Kill them all!"
The operatives raised their rifles, but the timer hit 00:00.
Instantly, the cell phones of every single operative on the ridge began to vibrate and chime simultaneously. The Director's satellite phone lit up with emergency alerts. The secure network of the Aegis Syndicate was experiencing a catastrophic, uncontainable data breach.
The operatives hesitated, looking at their phones. Their faces went pale as they saw their own names and operational histories being dumped onto public servers.
"The police are already en route to this location," Mark yelled up at them. "The upload triggered an automated tip to the FBI. You have three minutes before this ravine is swarming with federal agents. Run."
The operatives didn't wait for the Director's orders. They broke ranks, scrambling toward their vehicles, prioritizing their own survival over a collapsing empire.
The Director stood alone on the ridge, her pristine coat now splattered with mud. She glared down at Sarah with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred.
"This isn't over, Mrs. Evans," she hissed, before turning and disappearing into the dark forest.
The distant sound of police sirens began to wail through the valley.
Mark collapsed against the mud bank, exhausted, laughing and crying at the same time. Sarah fell to her knees beside him, pulling Leo and the baby into a tight, desperate embrace. The nightmare was finally ending. The sirens were getting louder, bringing safety, bringing the end of the Aegis Syndicate.
"We did it," Sarah whispered, kissing Mark's bruised face. "We're safe."
Mark smiled, stroking Lily's cheek. "We are. We're completely safe now."
But as the red and blue police lights began to flash through the trees above them, Leo picked up the dropped tablet from the mud. The upload screen had cleared, returning to the home menu.
Leo frowned. He tapped a folder labeled 'Family Photos'.
"Dad?" Leo asked, his voice suddenly very quiet, cutting through the sound of the approaching sirens.
"What is it, buddy?" Mark asked gently.
Leo turned the screen toward Sarah and Mark. It was a photo of Mark, taken years ago, standing on a beach. But he wasn't alone. He had his arm around another woman, and a young boy who looked exactly like Leo.
"Dad," Leo whispered, his eyes wide with a new, terrifying realization. "Who is that?"

Mark's exhausted smile slowly faded, replaced by a cold, unfamiliar stare that made Sarah's blood run entirely cold. The police cars slammed to a halt above them, but as Sarah looked at her husband, she realized the most dangerous person in the woods wasn't the Director.
It was the man she had just saved.
