Chapter 6 - The Forensic Discovery

The deeper my forensic team dug into the digital archives of the Ward Core mainframe, the more terrifying the truth became. It wasn't just a simple case of a husband cheating on his wife and trying to steal some corporate cash to fund his new mistress's lifestyle. It was an organized, multi-year campaign to systematically erase my family’s name from the history of the business my grandfather had built.
I sat in the secure server room in the basement of the tower, the air cool and buzzing with the hum of a hundred data processing units. Clara Croft stood beside me, holding a printed hard copy of an encrypted email thread dated three years ago—the exact year my grandfather fell ill and slipped into a permanent coma.
"Look at the routing headers, Ms. Ward," Clara said, her voice dropping into a register of pure, professional disgust. "Daniel didn't wait for your grandfather to pass away. He hired a private digital security firm out of Chicago to infiltrate our primary trust registry. He was trying to find a backdoor to invalidate the majority share block before you ever inherited it."
I scanned the emails. The messages were between Daniel and a high-level corporate hacker who operated out of an offshore data haven.
From: D. Ward To: Horizon Security Subject: Project Clean Slate The old man is unresponsive. The granddaughter is completely isolated in the management branch. She trusts me implicitly. I need the encryption keys for the Zurich trust files before the end of the fiscal year. If she discovers the underlying debt structure belongs to her family, I won't be able to remove her from the board.
My hands tightened around the edges of the paper until the clean white sheets crumpled under my fingers. A cold, heavy stillness settled into my chest—the kind of stillness that comes when the last residual shred of human emotion is wiped clean from a memory.
I had spent four years believing Daniel was just an ambitious man who had lost his way under the pressure of running a global corporation. I had spent forty-eight months protecting his reputation, clearing his liabilities, and letting him take the credit for every successful expansion because I loved him. I thought his occasional cruelty and his mother’s endless insults were just the toxic byproducts of an old family’s insecurity.
But it was never an insecurity. It was a strategy.
He had married me because he thought I was the key to unlocking the Mendoza fortune. And when he realized my grandfather had protected the trust with an uncrackable multi-generational security protocol, he decided to gaslight me into signing away my birthright through a fraudulent separation agreement.
"He was going to destroy me, Clara," I whispered into the cool air of the server room. "If I had signed that paper last night... if I had listened to Chloe and his mother and just crawled out of that house... he would have used the signature to execute a total asset transfer under the marital abandonment clause."

"Exactly," Clara said, her eyes flashing behind her glasses. "He had the private transport logistics pre-arranged for this morning. He was going to have your personal belongings sent to a storage locker in another state to prevent you from accessing your grandfather's legal files. But he made one fundamental mistake."
"He forgot that I built the network he was trying to hack," I said, standing up and smoothing down my suit. "Clara, forward these files directly to the federal prosecutor's office. Let’s see how his ambition holds up when he’s dealing with an indictment that doesn't offer a settlement option."
