Chapter 3 - The Panic in the Penthouse

By 2:00 AM, the news of the system lock had trickled down to the lower tiers of the Ward corporate hierarchy.

Inside a luxury high-rise apartment downtown—the very penthouse Daniel had promised to transfer into Chloe’s name after the divorce—the lights were blindingly bright. Chloe was pacing the length of the imported white marble living room, her designer high heels discarded on the floor, her phone held to her ear as she screamed at her brother’s legal advisor.

"What do you mean we can't touch the Panama trust? The papers were signed last month! Daniel said the money was completely hidden from his wife’s legal team!"

"Chloe, listen to me," her brother, a low-level financial broker named Tyler, rasped through the receiver. "The legal team isn't the problem. The problem is the bank itself. The entity that holds our Panama clearing license is a subsidiary of a Swiss trust called V.W. Heritage. That trust is owned by Elena Ward’s family. She didn't find the money through an audit, Chloe. She already owned the vault we put it in!"

Chloe’s phone slipped from her hand, bouncing against the plush Italian rug. She stared at Daniel, who was sitting on the edge of the glass coffee table, his head buried in his hands, his custom tuxedo shirt soaked through with sweat.

"Daniel," Chloe whispered, her voice shaking with a sudden, vicious clarity. "Daniel, look at me. You told me she was just a small-town girl your father brought into the business for tax purposes. You told me she didn't understand the market. You said she was just a glorified administrative assistant who managed your calendar!"

Daniel didn't look up. His voice was a hollow, broken growl. "She... she never told me. For four years, every time the board had a disagreement, she would go into the back room with the senior directors and come out with a compromise. I thought... I thought they liked me. I thought they respected my vision."

"They didn't respect your vision, you idiot!" Chloe shrieked, her face contorted in rage. "They were respecting her grandfather’s money! Daniel, the leasing agent for this building just emailed me. The corporate guarantee for this apartment has been cancelled. They’re giving us until noon tomorrow to clear out our things before they change the digital locks!"

Before Daniel could respond, the grand double doors of the penthouse clicked. The electronic lock flashed from its usual soft blue to a solid, aggressive red.

The door opened, and two men in identical charcoal suits stepped into the room. Behind them came Clara Croft, the head of the Mendoza forensic accounting unit—a woman whose name was whispered with terror in corporate courtrooms across the country.

"Mr. Ward, Ms. Lin," Clara said, her voice entirely devoid of emotion as she adjusted her spectacles. "We are here on behalf of the receivership board of Ward Core. This property is currently a corporate asset subject to an immediate freeze pending the investigation into asset diversion."

"This is my personal apartment!" Chloe shouted, stepping between Clara and the designer suitcases she had spent the afternoon packing with luxury goods. "Daniel gave it to me!"

"Daniel gave you an asset he didn't own, Ms. Lin," Clara replied, waving a hand to the moving team behind her. "Every item in this apartment purchased using the company's executive lifestyle allowance—including those Chanel bags on the counter and the diamond tennis bracelet you are currently wearing—is listed on the corporate ledger as company property. Please remove your personal garments immediately and step away from the secure safe."

Daniel finally stood up, his posture completely broken, his eyes looking wildly around the room as if searching for the ghost of his former power. "Clara... please. Tell Elena I need to see her. We can handle this privately. We don't need to involve the regulators. The company’s reputation will be destroyed if this hits the papers."

"The papers already have the story, Mr. Ward," Clara said, her team already moving systematically through the kitchen, sealing the wine cellars with official corporate tape. "And as for your reputation... I believe the state's attorney is currently reviewing the invoices you signed for the harbor project. Elena isn't trying to save your company anymore, Daniel. She’s currently renaming it."
