Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Alliance

By 10:00 AM, the corporate headquarters of Ward Core looked like an anthill that had been struck by lightning.

The main lobby, a vast three-story atrium lined with black marble and glass, was filled with reporters from every financial news outlet in the city. The digital tickers on the walls, which usually flashed the green arrows of a stable, high-performing stock, had been completely frozen, replaced by a simple, elegant black screen bearing the original family emblem of the Ward-Mendoza trust.

Inside the executive boardroom, Chloe Lin sat in the corner chair, her designer sunglasses down on her nose, her fingers frantically scrolling through her social media feeds. The lifestyle blogs that had spent the last six months praising her as the "brilliant new face of the city’s elite social circle" had already deleted her photographs. The fashion labels she had partnered with had issued simultaneous press releases stating they had "no active association with the Lin family consultants."

"They dropped me," Chloe whispered, her voice dead as she looked up at her brother, Tyler. "Every single brand. The charity committee just removed me from the winter gala board. They didn't even call me, Tyler. They just sent a automated email to my spam folder."

"We have bigger problems than your Instagram account, Chloe," Tyler hissed, pacing near the window. "The federal trade commission just flagged our maritime consulting firm for immediate asset review. They think Daniel was using our bank routing numbers to hide the harbor project kickbacks. If they find the secondary ledgers, we're not just broke—we're facing federal fraud charges."

The heavy mahogany doors of the boardroom swung open, and I walked in, followed by Clara Croft and three senior compliance investigators from the state’s regulatory board.

Chloe automatically stood up, her young voice trying to find its old, sharp edge. "Elena! You can't just throw us out of this building! My brother has an active consulting contract with the marketing division! You have to pay our severance!"

"Your brother’s contract was signed by Daniel without the required three-member board authorization, Chloe," I said, taking my place at the head of the long table. "In the legal world, we call that an ultra vires act—an action taken outside the scope of a director's legal authority. The contract is completely void, and the four hundred thousand dollars your brother received last month has been reclassified as an unauthorized corporate loan. I believe the compliance investigators have some questions regarding the repayment terms."

Tyler Lin’s face drained of color so fast he had to reach out and steady himself against the edge of the conference table. "An unauthorized loan? That... that means criminal conversion. We don't have that money! We used it to clear our debts with the Miami suppliers!"

"Then I suggest you find a very good defense attorney, Tyler," I said, opening my tablet and projecting the master liquidation spreadsheet onto the room's main screen. "Because by noon today, the state's attorney will be filing the formal indictments against your firm for complicity in corporate asset diversion."

Chloe looked at me, her eyes wide with a sudden, desperate realization that her beauty, her youth, and her carefully polished social climbing had brought her straight into a steel trap. "Elena... please. I didn't know. Daniel told me you were completely fine with the split! He said you were just waiting for the final settlement to move back to your family's farm!"

"My family doesn't own a farm, Chloe. We own the bank that holds your family’s mortgage," I said, not looking up from my screen. "Please leave the building before security accompanies you to the service elevator. I have an afternoon board meeting with our international partners, and I don't want the smell of cheap ambition ruining the room."
