Chapter 6 - The Final Link

The master bedroom door was kicked off its hinges before Thomas could reach the other side of the bed.

Lena burst into the room, her service weapon raised, her eyes locking onto Thomas instantly. "Drop the syringe, Mercer! Hands behind your head, right now!"

Thomas spun around, his face contorting into a mask of pure fury. He didn't drop the needle; instead, he lunged across the bed, trying to reach Emily, who was crouching against the nightstand, protecting her stomach with her arms.

Lena didn't hesitate. She fired a single, non-lethal shot that tore through Thomas’s shoulder, spinning him around and slamming him against the wall. The syringe fell from his fingers, shattering against the floor as he collapsed, groaning in pain.

Julian rushed into the room a second later, throwing himself onto the floor beside Emily, pulling her into his arms. "Emily! Oh my god, Emily, are you okay?"

"I’m okay," she sobbed, clutching his neck, her body shaking with a mix of terror and profound relief. "The baby is fine, Julian. He’s fine."

Lena kept her weapon trained on Thomas, who was clutching his bleeding shoulder, his eyes glaring at Julian with a venomous hatred.

"Why, Thomas?" Julian demanded, his voice thick with betrayal. "You were my father’s closest confidant. You’ve handled our family’s affairs for twenty years. Why would you try to destroy us?"

"Because your father was a thief, Julian!" Thomas spat, a bitter laugh escaping his lips. "He didn't build Sterling Shipping alone. My father was his partner on Pier 9. But when the company went public, your father restructured the shares, leaving my family with nothing but a salary and a desk in the corner. I spent twenty years waiting for the right moment to take back what belonged to me. I manipulated your uncle Charles into signing over his secondary rights to me years ago. If you and your child died, I would have inherited control of the entire empire."

"You framed Victoria," Lena said, her voice hard. "You used her code."

"She was an easy target," Thomas sneered, wincing as Lena applied a pair of steel handcuffs to his wrists. "She hated Emily enough that the police would never look deeper. I almost succeeded. If it hadn't been for you, Lena..."

"That’s your mistake, Mercer," Lena said, pulling him roughly to his feet as the distant sound of police sirens finally echoed up the estate’s driveway. "You calculated the money, but you forgot to calculate the loyalty."
