Chapter 5 - The Shadow on the Monitor

While the security detail secured Victoria at the airfield to await police custody, Lena and Julian sped back toward the Sterling Estate. The puzzle pieces were spinning in Lena’s mind, but the picture they formed was terrifying.

"The text said 'where it began,'" Lena muttered, her fingers flying across her laptop keyboard as the SUV sped through the dark highway. "But why frame Victoria? If Victoria goes to jail, and Emily... if Emily had died tonight, who actually benefits financially?"

Julian stared at the road, his hands gripping the steering wheel so hard his knuckles popped. "If I die without an heir, and Victoria is convicted of a felony, the entire Sterling trust collapses. It reverts back to the secondary beneficiaries outlined in my father’s original corporate charter from thirty years ago."

"And who is the head of that secondary tier?" Lena asked.

"My uncle," Julian said, his voice dropping into a hollow, horrified register. "Charles Sterling. He’s been living in retirement in Palm Beach for five years. He hasn't touched the corporate books since my father died."

"Are you sure about that?" Lena asked. She opened the encrypted financial portal of Sterling Shipping, bypassing three layers of firewalls. She began tracking the digital footprints of the administrative code that had been used to access the attic.

Suddenly, her screen flashed red. An alert popped up on the estate’s master security matrix.

"Julian," Lena said, her voice shaking slightly. "The master bedroom. The closed-circuit cameras just went dark. Not the whole house—just the security feed inside Emily’s room."

Julian slammed his foot on the accelerator, the engine roaring as the SUV pushed past ninety miles per hour. "Call the guards inside the house! Now!"

Lena dialed the security desk at the main gate. The phone rang once, twice, three times, before shifting into static. "The communications array has been jammed, Julian. Someone has cut the external lines to the estate. We’re twenty minutes away."

Back at the estate, the master bedroom was quiet, save for the crackle of the fireplace. Emily lay asleep, exhausted from the trauma of the evening, her stitched arm resting on a pillow. The room was dark, illuminated only by the orange glow of the embers.

The heavy oak door creaked open.

A figure slipped into the room, dressed in the dark uniform of the estate’s private medical staff. The person moved with absolute silence, carrying a small silver tray with a loaded syringe.

Emily stirred, her hazel eyes fluttering open as the shadow approached the bedside. "Dr. Evans? Is that you? I thought you said I didn't need any more medication until morning."

The figure didn't answer. They reached out, their gloved hand clamping firmly over Emily’s mouth before she could let out a scream. The white light of the moon cut through the window, illuminating the face beneath the medical cap.

It wasn't Dr. Evans. It was Thomas Mercer—Julian’s personal attorney and the man who had drafted the family trust.

"Shh, Emily," Thomas whispered, his eyes bright with a cold, manic intelligence as he brought the syringe closer to her IV line. "Don't fight it. It’s just a high dose of potassium chloride. It will look like a sudden, tragic cardiac arrest brought on by the stress of the chandelier accident. The paramedics will say your heart simply gave out. And the Sterling fortune will finally return to the people who actually built it."

Emily thrashed against his grip, her fingers clawing at his wrists, her mind screaming for her baby. She managed to turn her head slightly, biting down hard on his gloved hand.

Thomas growled in pain, losing his balance for a split second. Emily used all her strength to roll off the opposite side of the bed, dragging the IV pole down with her. It hit the hardwood floor with a massive, clattering crash that shattered the quiet of the house.
