Chapter 5 - The Ghost of the Past

Six months passed, and Elena's life had transformed completely. She was no longer just Luca’s secretary; she was his partner. They lived together in the main mansion, and Chloe had blossomed into a happy, thriving teenager who viewed Luca as a stern but fiercely loving father figure. Luca had even enrolled Chloe in a prestigious private school, where she excelled.
But just as Elena believed her past was completely buried, the ghost of her old life returned for one final, desperate act.
It happened during a high-profile charity gala that Luca was hosting at a luxury downtown hotel—a legitimate event to showcase his real estate foundation. Elena looked stunning in an emerald green silk gown, standing proudly by Luca’s side as he greeted city officials and businessmen.
During a lull in the evening, Elena excused herself to go to the restroom. The hallway was quiet, away from the bustling ballroom. As she washed her hands, she felt a sudden, chilling sensation of being watched.
She turned around, and her blood turned to ice.
Standing in the doorway of the restroom, looking disheveled, hollow-eyed, and manic, was Derek Vance.
"Hello, El," Derek whispered, a sick, twisted grin on his face. He looked thin, his clothes ragged—a desperate man with nothing left to lose.
"Derek," Elena gasped, backing up until her spine hit the marble counter. "How... how did you get in here? Luca’s men—"
"Luca’s men are distracted by all the fancy politicians," Derek hissed, pulling a small, silver revolver from his jacket pocket. "You thought you could just throw me away? You thought you could take my daughter and sleep with a mob boss, leaving me with nothing?!"
"Derek, put the gun down," Elena said, forcing her voice to remain steady, channelizing the strength she had learned from Luca. "You signed the papers. It's over. If you do this, Luca will kill you."
"He already killed my life!" Derek shouted, his eyes wide with madness. "The Rossis discarded me because of him! I'm a dead man walking anyway, Elena! But I’m taking you with me. If I can't have you, nobody will!"
He raised the gun, aiming it directly at her chest.
Elena didn't cower. She didn't scream. She looked Derek dead in the eye. "You used to terrify me, Derek. But now? You're just a pathetic coward."
Derek roared in anger, his finger tightening on the trigger.
BANG!
The gunshot echoed in the confined space. But Derek’s gun hadn't fired.
He blinked, looking down at his chest, where a blooming red stain was rapidly spreading across his shirt. He dropped his weapon, falling backward onto the floor, revealing Luca standing in the doorway, a sleek black pistol in his hand, his face a mask of absolute, merciless fury.
Luca hadn't hesitated. He stepped over Derek’s twitching body, not giving the man a second glance, and threw his arms around Elena.
"Are you hurt? Did he touch you?" Luca asked frantically, his hands scanning her body for injuries.
"I'm fine, Luca. I'm fine," Elena said, her voice shaking slightly but holding strong. She looked down at Derek, who had drawn his last breath. The monster of her past was finally, truly gone.
Marco and a dozen security guards flooded the room a second later. "Clean this up," Luca ordered Marco coldly. "No police. It was self-defense against an intruder, but I want it handled quietly. My woman has had enough drama for one lifetime."
"Yes, Boss," Marco said, immediately signaling his men.

Luca turned back to Elena, cupping her face in his hands. "It's over now, Elena. The past can never hurt you again. I promise you."
Elena nodded, a profound sense of freedom washing over her. The final chain holding her to her old life had been shattered.
