Chapter 2 - The Underworld's Shadow

A week passed in a blur of luxury and healing. Elena’s ribs were mending quickly, thanks to the daily visits from Luca’s private physician. Chloe was slowly transforming back into a normal twelve-year-old child; she spent her days reading in the massive estate library and walking through the heavily guarded gardens.
For Elena, however, the guilt of living in luxury without working was eating her alive. One morning, feeling strong enough, she put on her standard grey maid’s uniform and walked down to the main mansion's kitchen, intent on preparing breakfast.
She had just started slicing fruit when a cold voice startled her from the doorway.
"What do you think you are doing?"
Elena turned to find Luca standing there, dressed in a sharp, bespoke charcoal suit. His brow was furrowed in blatant displeasure.
"I... I was preparing breakfast, Mr. Marino," Elena stammered, dropping the knife onto the cutting board. "I can't just sit in the guest wing and do nothing. I need to earn my keep. I'm your maid."
Luca walked into the kitchen, his footsteps echoing on the marble floor. He stopped just inches away from her, his towering frame casting a shadow over her. He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently but firmly gripping her wrist—avoiding her injuries—and lifted her hand so the uniform sleeve fell back.
"You are no longer a maid in this house, Elena," Luca said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "I thought I made that clear."
"Then what am I?" Elena cried out, her frustration and confusion boiling over. "I have no money, no home of my own anymore, and a daughter to raise! I cannot live on your charity forever, Mr. Marino. It makes me feel... vulnerable. And the last time I was vulnerable, I ended up in a hospital bed."
Luca’s eyes flashed with an unreadable emotion. He released her wrist, stepping back. "It is not charity. It is a position. My personal secretary retired last month. The position pays three times what you made cleaning my floors. You will have an office in the main house. You will manage my schedule, handle my non-underworld correspondence, and learn how the legitimate side of my business operates."
Elena stared at him, dumbfounded. "Your secretary? But I don't know anything about running a business!"
"You managed to keep a child alive, fed, and clothed while living with a psychopath and earning minimum wage," Luca said, a ghost of a smirk playing on his lips. "You have excellent organizational skills and a high tolerance for stress. You are overqualified. The job is yours. Do not argue with me."
Before Elena could respond, Marco rushed into the kitchen, his usual calm demeanor replaced by stark urgency. "Boss. We have a problem at the docks. The Rossi family. They just intercepted a shipment. And they know about the woman."
Luca’s demeanor changed instantly. The casual air vanished, replaced by the terrifying aura of the city's most feared Mafia Don. "What do they know, Marco?"
"They know you took in Derek Vance's wife. They know Vance was working as a low-level informant for them. They think you're using her to get information on their routes."
Elena’s heart dropped into her stomach. An informant? Derek was working for a rival Mafia family?
Luca turned his gaze back to Elena, his eyes narrowing. "Did you know your husband worked for the Rossis?"
"No! I swear to God, I didn't!" Elena cried, shaking her head violently. "Derek told me he worked in construction! I didn't know anything about his life outside the apartment! Please, you have to believe me!"
Luca studied her face for a tense, agonizing five seconds. Finally, he nodded. "I believe you. But the Rossis don't care about the truth. They care about leverage." He turned to Marco. "Double the guard around the guest wing. No one goes in or out without my personal authorization. If a single Rossi soldier steps foot near this property, shoot to kill."
"Yes, Boss," Marco said, quickly exiting.
Luca looked back at Elena, who was now trembling, the temporary peace shattered. He stepped forward and placed both hands on her shoulders, his touch surprisingly grounding.
"Listen to me, Elena," he said, his voice absolute and unwavering. "You and Chloe are under my protection. The Rossis are trying to use you to start a war they cannot win. I will not let them touch you. Do you trust me?"
Looking into his dark, fierce eyes, Elena realized something terrifying. Despite who he was, despite the violence that surrounded him, she did trust him. Far more than she had ever trusted anyone in her life.

"I trust you," she whispered.
"Good," Luca said, his grip tightening slightly before he let go. "Stay inside. I am going to end this."
