Chapter 3 - The Price of Protection

The next forty-eight hours were a living nightmare of tension. The Marino estate became a fortress. Armed guards patrolled the perimeter with attack dogs, and the windows of the guest wing were fitted with heavy steel shutters. Chloe sensed the danger, clinging to Elena’s side as they watched the news, terrified that the fragile sanctuary they had found was about to crumble.

On the third night, the war came to their doorstep.

It was 2:00 A.M.—the same hour Luca had found Chloe cleaning the kitchen a week prior. Elena was startled awake by the sound of muffled gunfire echoing from the front gates. Alarms began to blare throughout the estate, a shrill, terrifying sound that made Chloe scream as she woke up.

"Mom! What's happening?!" Chloe cried, throwing her arms around Elena.

"Hide in the closet, Chloe! Now!" Elena ordered, her maternal instincts overriding her fear. She pushed Chloe into the large walk-in closet in the bedroom, burying her behind heavy winter coats. "Stay here. Do not make a sound, no matter what you hear."

Elena grabbed a heavy brass lamp from the nightstand, her hands shaking so badly she almost dropped it. She stood guard at the bedroom door, her breath coming in ragged gasps. The gunfire grew louder, closer, followed by the sound of shouting in the hallway of the guest wing.

The bedroom door burst open.

Elena screamed, raising the lamp to strike, but stopped when she saw Marco, his suit torn and a smear of blood on his cheek.

"Mrs. Marsh, we need to move. Now," Marco said, grabbing her arm. "They breached the eastern wall. We’re evacuating you to the safe room in the main house."

"Chloe! I have her!" Elena cried, pulling Chloe out of the closet. Together, they ran down the grand hallway, guided by Marco and two other armed guards. The air smelled of gunpowder and smoke.

As they crossed the glass bridge connecting the guest wing to the main mansion, a sniper round shattered the glass above them. Shards rained down like deadly rain. Marco tackled Elena and Chloe to the floor, covering them with his own body as more bullets whizzed overhead.

"Return fire!" Marco yelled into his earpiece.

Through the shattered glass, Elena looked down into the courtyard. There, in the middle of the chaos, was Luca. He was a force of nature. Clad in a black tactical vest, he fired a sleek submachine gun with lethal precision, moving like a shadow through the smoke. He was protecting his home, his men, and—Elena realized with a jolt—he was protecting them.

Suddenly, Luca looked up and caught sight of Elena on the bridge. His eyes widened in rare panic. He shouted something to his men, pointing toward the bridge.

Before Marco could get them moving again, a heavy boot kicked open the door at the end of the bridge. A large, scarred man wearing a rival family's colors stepped out, a shotgun raised. He pointed it directly at Elena and Chloe.

"Say goodbye, Marino's charity cases," the man sneered.

Elena threw herself over Chloe, closing her eyes, waiting for the blast.

BANG!

The gunshot was deafening, but Elena felt no pain. She opened her eyes to see the scarred man collapse to the ground, a single bullet hole perfectly centered in his forehead.

Behind him stood Luca, his gun still smoking, his face contorted in pure, unadulterated fury. He had sprinted up the stairs and across the mansion to get to them. He bypassed his guards, fell to his knees, and pulled both Elena and Chloe into a fierce, breathless embrace.

"I have you," Luca growled, his chest heaving as he held them tight against his tactical vest. "I have you. You're safe."

Elena buried her face in his neck, sobbing uncontrollably. The powerful aroma of his expensive cologne mixed with gunpowder comforted her in a way she couldn't explain. For the first time in her life, a man wasn't the source of her terror—he was the shield against it.
