Chapter 4 - The Truth Unraveled

The three days waiting for the DNA results were a living nightmare. Madeline had already begun her public smear campaign, telling everyone in Nashville’s high society that I was a gold-digger who had trapped her son with another man’s child. Brandon was suspended from his position at the family-owned investment firm "pending a character review," an internal coup orchestrated by his mother to strip him of his power.
But we weren't just waiting around. With Aunt Sarah's help and the legal expertise of our own attorney, we dug deep into the medical archives of the clinic where Brandon was conceived thirty years ago.
On Monday morning, we gathered in a private conference room at the family estate. The atmosphere was freezing. Twenty of our closest relatives sat around a massive mahogany table. Madeline sat at the head, a smug, victorious smile on her lips.
"Let's begin," Madeline's lawyer said, sliding an envelope across the table. "These are the official, certified results from the court-ordered DNA test between Brandon and the child, Luke."
Brandon tore the envelope open. He scanned the document, and a slow, fierce smile spread across his face. He passed it to the relative sitting next to him.
"One hundred percent match," Brandon announced, his voice ringing through the room like a bell. "Luke is my biological son. Maya has been completely faithful to me, and you have slandered her name across this entire city."
A murmur of relief and anger spread through the relatives.
Madeline’s smile faltered, but she quickly recovered, slamming her hand on the table. "Fine! So she didn't cheat! But it doesn't change the medical reality! Your father’s diary proved that Charles was sterile. If you share DNA with that boy, it means you carry the blood of a fraud! You are not a true descendant of the Nashville legacy, Brandon! You have no right to this estate, this house, or the family fortune! You are a bastard, and I am exposing it today!"
The relatives gasped, looking at Brandon in horror and confusion.
I stood up, holding a thick folder of my own. "You really should have checked your own history before opening this closet, Madeline. Because we didn't just test Luke and Brandon. We ran a secondary genetic comparison using a sample of Charles's hair from his old shaving brush, and we audited the records of Dr. Aris's fertility clinic from 1995."
I threw a medical report directly in front of her.
"Charles wasn't sterile, Madeline. Dr. Aris falsely diagnosed him because you bribed the doctor to do so. You see, Charles had a hereditary heart condition that he didn't want to pass down. You wanted a baby so badly to secure your marriage that you faked his sterility report, convinced him to undergo an experimental procedure, and used his actual, hidden samples to conceive Brandon!"

Madeline's face turned completely white. Her hands began to shake. "That's... that's a lie! I would never!"
"It gets worse," I said, leaning in. "When Charles found out the truth five years ago and threatened to run his own DNA test, he didn't die of a natural heart attack. We found the toxicology report from his autopsy that you buried. He had massive amounts of unprescribed peanut derivatives and digitalis in his system. He didn't just have a heart attack, Madeline. You poisoned your own husband when he threatened your wealth—the exact same way you tried to poison my son with peanut oil last Thursday!"
