Chapter 3 - The Secret Diary and the DNA Demand

By Friday morning, Luke was resting comfortably in his hospital bed, his color returning as he watched cartoons. Brandon hadn't left his side, but the silence between us was heavy, suffocating. The words his mother had shouted on the patio—“Your son? Are you certain you should call him that?”—hung in the air like a foul mist.
I knew I had been completely faithful to Brandon. We had been together since college, and Luke was the absolute miracle of our lives. But seeing the shadow of doubt in my husband's eyes broke my heart into a million pieces.
"Brandon," I whispered, walking over to the window. "Do you believe her? Do you think I would ever betray you?"
Brandon looked up, his eyes bloodshot and filled with agony. "Of course I trust you, Maya. But my mother... she doesn't just make things up out of thin air to humiliate herself in front of 20 relatives. She is a chess player. She has something. And until I know what it is, I feel like I'm losing my mind."
Before I could answer, the door to the room opened, and Brandon's aunt, Sarah—Madeline's younger sister—stepped inside. Unlike Madeline, Sarah had always been kind, though quiet and submissive to her older sister's iron will. She looked terrified, clutching a worn, leather-bound notebook to her chest.
"Sarah? What are you doing here?" Brandon asked, standing up.
"I had to come," Sarah whispered, checking the hallway before closing the door tightly. "I saw what Madeline did on the patio. It was monstrous. And when I heard Luke ended up in the hospital... I couldn't keep quiet anymore. Madeline has been planning this for years."
She handed the notebook to Brandon. "This belonged to your late father, Charles. Madeline hid it in the attic after he passed away four years ago. I found it while helping her pack for her move last month. Read the entries from five years ago—right around the time Maya got pregnant."
Brandon opened the diary, his eyes scanning the elegant handwriting of his late father. As he read, his face drained of color, and his hands began to tremble.
"What is it, Brandon?" I asked, rushing to his side.
He read aloud, his voice cracking: “Met with Dr. Aris today regarding the fertility treatments from thirty years ago. He confirmed the medical records. Due to my severe genetic condition, it was biologically impossible for me to sire a child. Brandon is a miracle... or he isn't mine. If Madeline lied to me, the entire family legacy is a sham. I am ordering a private DNA test on Brandon next week.”
The book ended there. Charles had died of a sudden heart attack just three days after that entry.
"Oh my god," I gasped, the puzzle pieces clicking together in a terrifying picture. "Madeline didn't think Luke was a bastard. She knows you might not be Charles's biological son! She’s projecting her own dark secret onto our innocent boy!"
"Exactly," Aunt Sarah nodded, tears streaming down her face. "If Charles had found out Brandon wasn't his, Madeline would have been divorced and left completely penniless under their strict prenuptial agreement. She killed the inquiry when Charles died. But when Luke was born, she became terrified that a modern DNA test or a medical emergency would expose the genetic truth about Brandon. She tried to alienate Luke from the family so no one would ever look closely at the family tree."
Right then, the door burst open. Madeline walked in, flanked by two high-priced family lawyers. She looked like a vulture ready to strike.

"There you are," Madeline sneered, ignoring the child in the bed entirely. "Enjoying your little hospital drama? I'm here to end this. I have filed an emergency petition with the court. Brandon, you will submit yourself and that boy to a legally binding, court-ordered DNA test. If he isn't yours, Maya leaves this city with nothing. And if you refuse, I will cut you out of the family trust entirely."
I stood up, stepping between her and my son. "We'll take the test, Madeline. But you better prepare yourself for the results. Because the truth is going to destroy you."
