Chapter 4 - The Public Smear Campaign

If I thought my family would go quietly into poverty, I underestimated their capacity for malice.

A week after the hospital incident, a video popped up on my Facebook feed. It was a video posted by Chloe, which had already gained 50,000 views and hundreds of shares.

In the video, Eleanor sat on a couch, dabbing fake tears from her eyes with a tissue. Chloe stood behind her, looking solemn and heartbroken.

"We are speaking out because we don't know what else to do," Chloe said to the camera, her voice trembling with manufactured emotion. "Our older sister, who became a multi-millionaire through her tech startup, has completely abandoned our elderly parents. After a minor car accident, she became unstable. She cut off our retirement funds, is evicting me from my home, and is suing our parents for money she gifted them years ago. She's keeping her grandchildren away from them. Please share this. Don't let corporate greed destroy a loving family."

The comments section was a cesspool of judgment.

"How disgusting! Money changes people."

"Abandoning her own parents after a car crash? Karma will get her."

"What a toxic, selfish woman. Her poor mother!"

My phone began to ring with calls from distant relatives, old high school friends, and even a few business associates questioning my character. The internet had judged me, and I was the villain.

Marcus called me immediately. "Don't panic. We can issue a legal cease-and-desist."

"No," I said, a cold fire burning in my chest. I was sitting up now, standing on my own two feet for a few seconds at a time during therapy. My mind was sharper than ever. "A cease-and-desist makes me look guilty. They want to play on social media? Let's play by social media rules. Do you still have the recordings?"

"Every single one," Marcus replied, understanding clicking in his voice. "And I have the financial ledgers."

"Good. Set up a live stream on my official business and personal pages for tomorrow night. Title it: The Cost of 'Family Values': The Truth with Receipts."

I spent the next twenty-four hours preparing. If they wanted to use my name for clout and sympathy, I was going to give the public a masterclass in forensic accounting.
