Chapter 3 - The Vultures Circle the Hospital

Two weeks passed. With intensive daily physical therapy, I graduated from a bedbound state to a wheelchair. My twins, Leo and Maya, were being cared for by Clara, an angelic, highly qualified nanny Marcus had found. They visited me every day, their laughter filling the sterile room and giving me the strength to push through the agony of retraining my legs to move.
But the peace couldn't last. The vultures were getting desperate.
One afternoon, the door to my hospital room burst open. Eleanor and Chloe marched in, flanked by my father, Richard, who usually stayed in the background enjoying his quiet life of luxury.
Clara, who was holding Maya, immediately stepped forward defensively. "Excuse me, visiting hours are strictly monitored—"
"Get out," Eleanor snapped at Clara. "We are family. We have a right to be here."
"Clara, please take the twins for a walk in the garden," I said calmly, unlocking the brakes on my wheelchair to face them. "And tell hospital security that I have unauthorized guests."
As the door closed behind Clara, Chloe stormed up to my wheelchair, throwing a stack of papers onto my lap. "Sign these. Right now."
I looked down. It was a legal document revoking the eviction notice and reinstating their access to my bank accounts, along with a clause guaranteeing them a monthly stipend.
"You've had your fun," Richard said, speaking up with a stern, authoritative voice he hadn't earned. "You've punished us enough. Your mother hasn't been able to show her face at the club. Chloe's friends are mocking her because she might have to move into a cheap apartment. This is childish. You are wealthy. You owe us for your upbringing."
I looked at my father, the man who sat by and watched me bleed financially for a decade without ever saying thank you. "I owe you nothing. I bought your house. I paid off your debts. If we calculate the cost of my upbringing versus what I've given you, you are in the negative by a million dollars."
"You ungrateful bitch!" Chloe screamed, lunging forward to grab my arm. "You're sitting here playing invalid while our lives are ruining! You're doing this out of spite!"
She grabbed my bruised shoulder, twisting it. A sharp gasp of pain escaped my lips.
Suddenly, the door flew open again. Two burly hospital security guards, followed by Marcus and two police officers, entered the room.
"Get your hands off my client," Marcus roared.
Chloe froze, her face turning pale as the police officers stepped forward. "Ma'am, step away from the patient immediately. You are trespassing and committing assault on a recovering patient."
"Assault?!" Eleanor gasped. "This is our daughter! We are just talking!"
"The conversation is over," the officer said coldly. "The patient has a restraining order filed against you as of this morning. You were served at your home, but since you decided to bring the harassment here, you are now in violation."

As the police cuffed a hysterical Chloe and escorted my shocked, pale parents out of the building, I looked at Marcus. "Is it done?"
Marcus nodded, a fierce smirk on his face. "The lawsuit for the recovery of the unpaid loans has been filed. They are officially going broke."
