Chapter 9 - The Final Verdict

The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity. The gallery was filled with journalists, high-society figures who had attended the ruined wedding, and curious onlookers.
Evelyn, Beatrice, and Victor Sterling sat at the defense table, shackled at their wrists and ankles. The arrogance that had defined them for decades was entirely gone. Beatrice looked frail and defeated, her expensive legal team sitting with slumped shoulders. Victor stared at the desk, refusing to look at anyone. Evelyn’s eyes were red and swollen, her gaze fixed entirely on Marcus, who sat in the front row of the gallery, holding Lily’s hand. Julian sat on Lily's other side.
The judge slammed the gavel down, bringing the room to an absolute silence.
"In light of the overwhelming evidence provided by the federal investigation, including authenticated financial ledgers, digital communications detailing the planned murder of Arthur Vance, and the attempted poisoning of Marcus Kingston," the judge announced, her voice echoing with absolute authority, "the court accepts the guilty pleas of the defendants."
The judge looked down at the defense table with palpable disgust.
"Victor Sterling, for the charges of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, corporate fraud, and racketeering, I sentence you to life in prison without the possibility of parole. You will spend the rest of your days in a maximum-security facility."
Victor closed his eyes, a single shudder passing through his body.
"Beatrice Vance, for your role as a co-conspirator in murder, corporate fraud, and child abuse, I sentence you to thirty years in federal prison."
Beatrice let out a soft weep, leaning against her lawyer.
The judge then turned her gaze to Evelyn. "Evelyn Vance. You used the sacred vow of marriage as a weapon of attempted murder. You showed no remorse until you were caught. For attempted first-degree murder and corporate espionage, I sentence you to twenty-five years in prison."
Evelyn let out a choked cry, her eyes locking onto Marcus. "Marcus! Please! Forgive me! I was forced into it! Marcus!" she screamed as the bailiffs stood her up to lead her away.
Marcus didn't blink. He didn't look away, nor did he smile with malice. He simply watched her with absolute indifference. The woman he thought he loved was gone, replaced by a ghost of the past. As she was dragged through the side doors, her screams faded into the corridor.
The courtroom began to empty, journalists rushing out to file their breaking stories. Marcus stayed in his seat for a moment, feeling a deep, profound sense of peace wash over him.

He looked down at Lily. The little girl looked up at him, a tear slipping down her cheek, but this time, it was a tear of pure relief. "Is it over, Marcus?"
"It’s over, Lily," Marcus said softly, wiping her tear away. "We’re finally free."
