Chapter 5 - The Legal War and The Counter-Attack

The next two months were a brutal legal war. Beatrice and Evelyn Vance, along with Victor Sterling, employed the most expensive defense lawyers money could buy. They launched a massive counter-offensive in the media, claiming that Marcus and Julian had conspired to frame them using deepfake technology and coerced testimony from a traumatized child.
The tabloids shifted again. "Framed or Filthy? The Kingston Conspiracy Deepens," read the headlines.
Marcus found himself under intense public scrutiny. Every move he made was watched by paparazzi. But he didn't care about himself; his main priority was protecting Lily. He had legally become Lily’s temporary guardian, bringing her to live at the secure Kingston estate, away from the prying eyes of the press.
One afternoon, Marcus was sitting in the garden, watching Lily draw with chalk on the terrace. For the first time since the wedding, she looked like a normal child, a smile finally gracing her face.
Julian walked out, holding a tablet. "We have a problem, Marcus. The defense has filed a motion to throw out Lily’s video evidence. They’re arguing that because she was a minor under Beatrice’s legal guardianship at the time, the phone was technically Beatrice’s property, and the recording was an invasion of privacy and illegal surveillance."
Marcus frowned. "Can they do that?"
"In a highly technical, corrupt way? Yes," Julian sighed. "If the judge accepts the motion, the video is suppressed. Without the video, our case for attempted murder against Evelyn weakens significantly. We’d be relying solely on your flask, which their lawyers are claiming was contaminated after the event by our team to frame her."
Marcus stood up, pacing the terrace. "They’re trying to silence Lily again. Even from behind bars, Beatrice is trying to crush this kid."
Suddenly, Lily stopped drawing. She looked up at the two men, her expression surprisingly mature for her age. "They can throw away the video," she said softly.
Marcus knelt down beside her. "What do you mean, Lily?"
"My dad... he knew they would try to delete things," Lily said, pulling a small silver key from around her neck, hidden beneath her shirt. "Before he died, he gave me this. He said if anything bad ever happened to him, I had to go to the old library in our hometown. There’s a safety deposit box there. He said it has everything."
Marcus and Julian exchanged a look of pure shock. Arthur hadn't just discovered the plot; he had secured the insurance policy.
"Why didn't you tell us before, Lily?" Julian asked gently.

"Because I was scared," Lily whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "Beatrice told me if I ever mentioned my dad’s keys, she would hurt my friends at school. But I’m not scared anymore. Marcus protects me."
Marcus felt a profound wave of emotion. He hugged the little girl tightly. "You’re incredibly brave, Lily. Let’s go get your dad’s truth."
