Chapter 6 - The Secret in the Vault

That same night, under the cover of darkness and accompanied by a heavy security detail, Marcus, Julian, and Lily drove to the small town of Oakhaven, two hours outside the city. The town library was a historic stone building, closed for the night, but Julian had already pulled strings with the local mayor to grant them emergency access.
The elderly librarian met them at the side door, her hands shaking as she unlocked it. "Arthur was a good man," she whispered to Marcus. "He always told me that if his daughter came back with that key, I should let her into the basement archives without question."
The basement was cool and musty, filled with rows of old newspapers and historical documents. In the very back stood a wall of antique iron lockers used for preserving town records and private family deeds.
Lily walked confidently to locker number 114. She inserted the small silver key and turned it. With a heavy click, the iron door swung open.
Inside was a single, dusty black leather briefcase.
Julian pulled it out and set it on a nearby table. It wasn't locked. When he opened it, Marcus gasped. Inside were stack after stack of physical documents, ledger books, and a series of encrypted USB drives labeled with specific dates.
"This is it," Julian whispered, his fingers trembling as he flipped through the ledger. "It’s the complete double-entry bookkeeping of Vance Logistics for the last ten years. And look at this..."
He pointed to a document signed by Victor Sterling and Beatrice Vance. It was a formal contract, dated a year before Marcus even met Evelyn. It outlined the exact phases of the plan: Phase 1: The Introduction. Phase 2: The Engagement. Phase 3: The Acquisition (Marcus's death). Phase 4: The Liquidation of Kingston Assets.
But the most damning piece of evidence was a printed email chain from the night of Arthur’s death. Victor Sterling had written to Beatrice: 'Arthur knows. He has the files. I will handle him tonight on his way home. Make sure the kid doesn't have copies.'
"It's a premeditated murder confession," Marcus said, his voice shaking with a mix of horror and vindication. "They killed Arthur in cold blood."
"And they planned to do the exact same thing to you," Julian added, closing the briefcase. "This doesn't just destroy their defense, Marcus. This puts Victor Sterling on death row or in prison for life without parole. And Evelyn and Beatrice are going down as co-conspirators to first-degree murder."
As they left the library, Marcus looked at Lily, who was holding her teddy bear tightly. "Your dad was a hero, Lily. He saved my life, and now, he’s going to get the justice he deserves."

Suddenly, the headlights of three black SUVs blinded them as they stepped into the parking lot. The doors flew open, and several armed men stepped out.
"Drop the briefcase," a voice shouted from the shadows. It was Victor Sterling’s fix-it man, a notorious fixer named Ray Collins. "You didn't think we’d let you walk out of here with that, did you?"
