Chapter 4 - A Mother’s PerilThree weeks passed. Under Daniel’s protection, Hannah’s health improved. He had moved her into a beautiful suite on the second floor, refusing to let her lift a finger. Little Ben often visited her, bringing her drawing books and sitting by her side to talk to the baby.

Daniel, despite his brutal reputation, became a constant, comforting presence. He would join her for dinner, listening intently as she talked about her childhood, her love for her brother Caleb, and her dreams for her daughter. For the first time in eight months, Hannah felt safe.
But peace in Daniel’s world was always an illusion.
It was a stormy Tuesday night when the trap snapped shut. Daniel had been called away to a mandatory meeting with the regional commission at the downtown hotel—a meeting orchestrated by Victor to get him out of the mansion.
Hannah was in her room, helping Ben with his homework, when the power suddenly cut out. The entire mansion plunged into pitch-black darkness.
"Ben, stay behind me," Hannah whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.
The heavy silence of the house was broken by the sound of footsteps—heavy, tactical boots marching down the hallway. It wasn't the rhythmic stride of Martin or the estate guards.
The door to her suite was kicked open with a loud crash. A flashlight beam blinded her.
"Target secured," a rough voice shouted.
"Run, Ben!" Hannah screamed, pushing the boy toward the adjoined bathroom that led to the servant tunnels. Ben hesitated for a split second, then scrambled into the darkness just as two masked men rushed into the room.
Hannah fought with everything she had, grabbing a heavy brass lamp from the nightstand and swinging it, striking one man in the face. But her advanced pregnancy slowed her down. The second man grabbed her from behind, pinning her arms.
"Don't hurt the belly," the man growled. "The boss wants the baby alive to keep Carver compliant."
A cloth soaked in chloroform was pressed against her face. Hannah gasped, struggling for air, but the sweet, chemical fumes quickly invaded her lungs. As the world faded into darkness, her final thought was of her unborn child.
When Ben emerged from the tunnels ten minutes later, the room was empty. The boy, crying but determined, grabbed Hannah’s forgotten phone from the floor and dialed the only number he knew by heart.

Daniel answered on the first ring. "Hannah?"
"Mr. Carver!" Ben sobbed. "Bad men took her! They took Hannah!"
