Chapter 3 - The Alliance of Snakes

The next morning, news of the broken engagement hit the high-society circles of Providence like a bomb. Claire Whitlock sat in her father’s opulent office overlooking the rainy harbor, her face pale with rage.

Her father, Thomas Whitlock, a ruthless man with silver hair and cold blue eyes, slammed his fist on his mahogany desk. "You foolish girl! Do you have any idea what you’ve ruined? The Carver merger was supposed to legitimize our offshore accounts! Now Daniel is digging into our shipping manifests!"

"It’s not my fault!" Claire yelled back. "It’s that pregnant rat! Daniel protected her. He put his jacket on her, Father! He looked at her the way he never looked at me!"

Thomas paused, his eyes narrowing. "The maid? The Brooks widow?"

"Yes! She’s been slinking around the mansion for months. What if she’s found something? What if she knows about her husband?"

Thomas stood up, walking to the window. "Aaron Brooks was a loose end. He found the secondary ledgers your cousin left in the harbor office. If the widow has been feeding information to Daniel, we are in severe danger. Daniel Carver doesn't just sue people, Claire. He buries them."

The office door opened, and a man in a tailored dark suit walked in. It was Victor Ross, Daniel’s second-in-command and the head of his security detail.

"Mr. Whitlock," Victor said, his voice smooth. "We have a problem."

Thomas didn't look surprised. "I assume Daniel has ordered an audit?"

"Worse. He’s personally reviewing the harbor logs from the night Brooks died. He’s also moved the widow into the master wing. He’s guarding her himself." Victor crossed his arms, a bitter smile on his face. "Daniel has grown soft. He’s letting a woman and a child dictate the future of our syndicate."

"Can you handle it, Victor?" Thomas asked, a sinister glint in his eye. "If Daniel were to suffer an... accident, you would be next in line to run the Providence waterfront. And the Whitlock family would be happy to support your leadership."

Victor nodded slowly. "Daniel is strong, but he’s distracted by the girl. If we take her, we control him. And once we have what we need, we can clean up the loose ends once and for all."

Claire smiled, a cruel, satisfied expression returning to her face. "Make sure she suffers, Victor. I want her to lose everything, just like she made me lose everything."
