Chapter 9 - The Rebirth of the Sanctuary

By the spring of 2026, the Newton house had undergone a complete transformation. The dark, heavy furniture that Sebastian had chosen during their short, suffocating marriage was gone, replaced by bright, open Scandinavian woods, clean white linens, and large floor-to-ceiling windows that allowed the morning sun to flood the quartz countertops.
Valerie stood at her stove, the smell of fresh rosemary, garlic, and roasting vegetables filling the kitchen air. She wore a simple gray cashmere sweater, her hair loose, her silver watch catching the warm light of the afternoon.
Her phone rang. The screen displayed the directory for the Boston Financial Advisory Firm’s regional board.
"Valerie," the managing partner’s voice said, clear and full of warmth. "The executive committee just finalized the vote. Following your successful restructuring of the regional compliance department after the Castillo incident, we are officially naming you the Managing Director of Private Wealth Management for the entire New England division. Your position starts on the first of the month."
Valerie smiled, her thumb running along the edge of the smooth quartz. "Thank you, Arthur. I accept. The compliance logs are already locked for the new quarter."
She hung up the phone and walked out onto her bluestone porch. The neighborhood was quiet, the live oaks beginning to bloom with the fresh green leaves of May. There were no Ford F-150 trucks pulling sharply into her driveway. No angry mothers-in-law carrying floral suitcases. No small, insecure men trying to lock her out of her own light.
A silver sedan pulled up to the curb, and Diane Vance stepped out, carrying a small box of premium pastries and a bottle of high-end French champagne.

"Is the new director available for a celebration?" Diane called out, her laughter echoing through the garden walkway.
"She’s been ready all morning," Valerie said, stepping down the stairs to meet her friend.
