Chapter 3 - The Return of the Rightful Owner

At 11:12 p.m., the quiet, tree-lined street in Newton was woken up by the synchronized arrival of three police cruisers. The blue lights flashed against the dark windows of the colonial houses, casting long, rhythmic shadows across the perfectly manicured lawns.
Sebastian’s Ford F-150 was still parked arrogantly in the middle of the driveway, blocking the garage entrance.
Valerie stepped out of the lead cruiser, flanked by Diane Vance and Sergeant Briggs. The two patrol officers moved to the perimeter of the house, their flashlights cutting through the darkness, illuminating the windows of the master bedroom upstairs where the lights were bright. Theresa and Arthur had already made themselves at home.
Sergeant Briggs walked up the bluestone steps and knocked heavily against the oak door. Three solid thuds echoed through the neighborhood.
"Newton Police! Open the door!" Briggs shouted.
A few moments later, the curtains beside the window twitched. Sebastian’s face appeared, pale and confused under the flashing blue lights. He opened the door halfway, still wearing his socks, a half-eaten sandwich in his hand.
"Officer? What’s going on?" Sebastian asked, his eyes darting from Briggs to Valerie, then to the thick legal folders in Diane’s arms. "There’s no emergency here. My wife had an emotional episode and left the house voluntarily earlier tonight. We’re just trying to sleep."
"Step back from the door, Mr. Bennett," Sergeant Briggs said, his voice entirely devoid of warmth. "We are here with the sole owner of this property, Valerie Bennett. We have certified court records and trust documentation establishing her exclusive right to possession. You have unlawfully excluded her from her own home. Open the door fully and step onto the porch."
Theresa came rushing down the stairs, wearing one of Valerie’s expensive silk monogrammed robes she had taken from the master closet. "What is the meaning of this? Do you know who we are? My brother-in-law is an attorney in Columbus! You can't just come to a private home in the middle of the night and terrorize elderly citizens!"
"Ma'am, you are currently trespassing on a property you do not own, do not lease, and do not have permission to inhabit," Diane Vance said, stepping forward into the foyer as Briggs pushed the door wide open. "My name is Diane Vance, legal counsel for the Bennett Property Trust. If you do not remove that robe and begin packing your bags within the next ten minutes, I am instructing these officers to arrest you for criminal trespass and destruction of trust property."
Arthur appeared at the top of the stairs, holding a pillow from the master bed. "Sebastian! Do something! Tell them you live here!"

"I do live here!" Sebastian yelled, his face turning purple as he glared at Valerie. "Valerie, tell them! Stop this dramatic stunt! You’re embarrassing us in front of the whole neighborhood!"
"The only embarrassment here is you, Sebastian," Valerie said, her voice cool, steady, and loud enough for the neighbors watching from their porches to hear. "You threw me out of my own house so your parents could steal my space and hand me their bills. You thought I was weak because I kept my peace during our marriage. You forgot what I do for a living. I build cages for financial predators. And tonight, you walked right into yours."
