Chapter 9 - The Reckoning of Utility

The silence that followed was broken only by the sound of the wind howling outside and Leo’s sudden, sharp cry, startled by the noise. Evelyn collapsed to her knees, clutching her baby, sobbing uncontrollably as Julian reached her, wrapping his arms around them both in a desperate embrace.
"Are you okay? Is he okay?" Julian choked out, his hands shaking as he checked Evelyn and the baby for any signs of injury.
"We're okay... we're okay," Evelyn wept, burying her face in his shoulder. "She tried to take him, Julian. She completely lost her mind."
Below them, the police officers and paramedics—who had been en route to serve the official arrest warrant for perjury when Julian alerted them to the security breach—rushed to Eleanor’s unmoving form. A pool of dark blood was slowly forming beneath her head on the white marble.
An hour later, the estate was flooded with emergency vehicles, their red and blue lights painting the wet driveway in rhythmic patterns. Eleanor was loaded into an ambulance, barely alive, suffering from a severe traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures.
Julian sat with Evelyn in the living room, a blanket wrapped around her shoulders. The security chief entered, bowing his head respectfully. "Mr. Vance, the perimeter is secure. The men Mrs. Eleanor hired have been detained by the police. They’ve already confessed to being paid via an offshore account tied to her personal estate."
Julian nodded slowly. "Thank you, Arthur. Ensure the guards are doubled for the next few weeks regardless."
Once they were alone, Evelyn looked at Julian, her voice quiet. "What happens now, Julian? If she survives... what does this mean for us?"
Julian looked out the window at the receding ambulance lights. His mind, always processing the long-term utility of every outcome, came to a solemn conclusion. "If she survives, she will never see the inside of a courtroom, Evie. The medical reports from the paramedics indicate severe neurological damage. She will likely require round-the-clock specialized care for the rest of her life. She has effectively neutralized herself."

He sat beside his wife, taking her hand. "The legal system would have punished her, but her own obsession with control is what ultimately destroyed her. We don't need to seek vengeance, nor do we need to feel guilt. The maximum amount of good we can do now is to focus entirely on healing our family, rebuilding your sense of safety, and ensuring Leo grows up knowing only love, not legacy."
Evelyn rested her head against his shoulder, looking at the baby sleeping peacefully in his portable bassinet nearby. The storm outside was beginning to clear, the heavy rain tapering off into a gentle, cleansing drizzle. The threat was gone, buried under the weight of its own malice.
