Chapter 3 - Shadows on the Wall

The news of the rift within the ultra-wealthy Vance family began to leak into high-society blogs, whispered about over charity luncheons and golf courses. Eleanor was a master of the whisper campaign; she began portraying herself as a heartbroken grandmother, desperately trying to save her infant grandson from a chaotic, unstable home environment.
Inside the estate, Evelyn felt like a prisoner. Even with the new security guards patrolling the perimeter, she couldn't shake the feeling that Eleanor’s eyes were everywhere. Every time Leo cried, a spike of adrenaline shot through her, terrified that someone would use the baby’s normal fussiness as evidence of her failure as a mother.
"I can't live like this, Julian," Evelyn admitted one evening as they sat in the dim light of the living room. The grand house felt less like a home and more like a gilded cage. "Every shadow looks like her. Every time the phone rings, I think it’s the court coming to take my baby away."
Julian wrapped his arms around her, kissing the top of her head. "I know, sweetheart. But the legal framework takes time to deploy safely. If we release the nursery footage prematurely to the press, it becomes a media circus, and a judge might issue a gag order, locking the evidence away from public view while Eleanor handles the fallout behind closed doors. We need the court hearing. We need her to swear under oath that she was attacked."
"But the emotional toll..." Evelyn whispered. "Is it worth it?"
"From a purely logical standpoint, yes," Julian said softly, trying to balance his natural analytical mindset with the deep empathy he felt for his suffering wife. "If we settle quietly, she retains her power and will strike again when Leo is older. If we destroy her credibility completely, she loses her social leverage, her corporate standing, and her legal rights to ever come near our child again. One massive, controlled explosion now ensures a lifetime of peace for Leo."
The next day, a courier arrived at the gate, delivering a formal summons. The emergency custody hearing was set for Friday morning. Along with the summons was a private letter addressed to Julian, written in Eleanor’s elegant, sweeping handwriting.

Julian, A real man protects his legacy, not the temporary distractions of his youth. Drop this foolish defiance, send that girl back to where she came from, and bring my grandson to his proper home. If you do this, the board will remain secure, and your position as CEO will be solidified. If you choose her, I will strip you of everything the Vance name provides. Choose wisely.
Julian didn't show the letter to Evelyn. Instead, he walked down to the basement furnace room, threw the expensive stationery into the flames, and watched it burn to ash. He had already made his choice, and it had nothing to do with money. It had everything to do with the fundamental human right to safety, dignity, and love—things his mother had never understood.
