Chapter 7 - The Desperate Strike

Deprived of her corporate power and facing imminent criminal charges, Eleanor retreated to her private penthouse, isolated from the high society that had swiftly turned its back on her. The gossip columns were savage, and her former friends conveniently forgot her phone number. In her mind, the blame lay entirely on one person: Evelyn.
It was a stormy Tuesday evening when the security perimeter at Julian and Evelyn’s estate was breached. Julian was stuck in the city, finalizing the corporate restructuring documents, leaving Evelyn at home with Leo and the private security team.
The storm had knocked out the main power lines in the area, causing the estate to switch to its backup generators. The transition created a brief, sixty-second window where the electronic gates defaulted to a mechanical bypass for safety.
A sleek, black SUV pulled into the driveway during the downpour. From the security station, a guard noticed the vehicle and moved to intercept it, but he was suddenly confronted by two men hired by a private agency under Eleanor's direct payroll. A chaotic scuffle ensued in the driving rain.
Inside the house, Evelyn felt an immediate sense of dread when the lights flickered and dimmed. She rushed to Leo's nursery, lifting him from his crib and holding him tightly against her chest. The house was terrifyingly dark, lit only by the occasional flash of lightning through the grand windows.
Footsteps echoed up the marble staircase—heavy, hurried footsteps that didn't match the rhythmic patrol of their security team.
Evelyn locked the nursery door, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She reached for her phone, dialing Julian. "Julian! Someone is in the house! The power went out, and—"
Before she could finish, the heavy wooden door groaned under a massive impact. Someone was throwing their weight against it. Evelyn retreated into the large walk-in closet inside the nursery, pressing herself into the furthest corner behind rows of coats, covering Leo’s mouth gently to keep him from crying out.
The nursery door splintered open. Through the gap in the closet door, Evelyn saw a figure enter the room, drenched in rain, holding a flashlight. It wasn't a hired thug.
It was Eleanor.

Her hair was wild from the storm, her clothes soaked, her eyes completely vacant of reason. She looked like a ghost haunting the ruins of her own making. "Evelyn!" Eleanor called out, her voice a twisted, sing-song whisper that chilled Evelyn to the bone. "Where are you hiding my grandson? You took my company, you took my son, you took my reputation... but you won't keep the Vance heir from me."
Evelyn held her breath, tears streaming down her face, praying that Leo wouldn't wake up. The sheer insanity radiating from Eleanor was far more terrifying than the physical assault in the nursery weeks prior. This was a woman who had let her obsession with control erode her entire sanity.
