Chapter 5 - Fallout and Fragile Peace

Judge Harris stared at the monitor for a long moment before turning his gaze toward Eleanor. The warmth and familiarity that had previously existed in his eyes were entirely gone, replaced by a profound disgust.
"Mrs. Vance," Judge Harris said, his voice dropping into a stern, judicial tone. "You stood before this court and swore under oath that you were the victim of an unprovoked assault by a woman you claimed was mentally unstable. The evidence before me shows an act of domestic violence perpetrated by you against a young mother, in immediate proximity to a sleeping newborn."
Richard Sterling looked completely blindsided, his mouth opening and closing as he looked at his client, who was frozen in her seat. "Your Honor, if we could request a brief recess—"
"Request denied," Judge Harris snapped. "The petition for emergency custody is denied with prejudice. Furthermore, I am issuing an immediate, temporary protection from abuse order against Eleanor Vance. You are ordered to stay no less than five hundred yards away from Evelyn Vance, Julian Vance, and the infant, Leo Vance. Any violation of this order will result in immediate arrest."
Judge Harris looked at Marcus. "Counsel, I highly suggest you deliver a copy of this footage to the District Attorney’s office. This court will not tolerate perjury or physical violence."
As the judge banged his gavel, signaling the end of the session, Evelyn sank back into her chair, a massive, shuddering breath escaping her lungs. The weight that had been crushing her chest for days finally lifted. Julian wrapped his arms around her, holding her tight.
"It’s over, Evie. The legal shield is in place," Julian whispered.
Across the room, Eleanor slowly stood up. Her lawyers were huddled around her, whispering frantically about damage control, but she wasn't listening. She stared at Julian and Evelyn, her eyes burning with a desperate, trapped fury. She had lost her legal bid, she had committed perjury, and her reputation among the elite was now a ticking time bomb.
As they walked out of the courthouse through a private exit to avoid any potential media, Evelyn looked at Julian. "She won't stop, will she? A woman like that... her pride is her entire life. We just destroyed it."

"She has no moves left in the legal system," Julian said, his analytical mind already preparing for the next phase. "But a cornered animal is dangerous. From a utilitarian perspective, we must assume she will now try to hit us economically or socially. We need to cut off her financial lifeblood before she can use it to fund a retaliation."
They returned to the estate, and for the first time in weeks, Evelyn was able to hold Leo without looking over her shoulder. But the peace was fragile. The true battle for the Vance legacy—and their ultimate freedom—had only just begun.
