Chapter 2 - The Currency of Malice

By the following morning, the illusion of safety within the Vance estate had evaporated. Evelyn woke up with severe bruising along her hairline and a deep, aching trauma that made every sudden sound cause her to jump. Julian had already mobilized a private security team, replacing the estate’s existing guards—many of whom had historical ties to his mother—with independent contractors answerable only to him.

"We need to go to the police, Julian," Evelyn said softly over breakfast, her voice lacking its usual warmth. She stared into her coffee mug, her face pale. "What she did... it was assault. If a stranger did that, they'd be in a cell."

Julian sat across from her, his laptop open, spreadsheets of corporate holdings illuminating his tired face. "If we go to the police right now, Evie, Eleanor’s legal team will have the report sealed before it hits the wires. She will frame it as a family dispute, accuse you of instability, and use her connections to tie us up in family court. The net utility of a standard police report against a woman who practically funds the local municipality is dangerously low. We have to hit her where she actually feels pain: her control over the Vance Group."

Evelyn looked up, fear flickering in her eyes. "She won't just sit back. She controls the family trust, Julian. Your father left her the voting majority."

"She controls the majority only if the board remains compliant," Julian countered, his eyes hardening. "She uses the company’s philanthropic arms to maintain her social standing. If I can prove to the board of directors that her personal volatility poses a direct existential risk to the brand's stability and stock value, we can force a restructuring."

Before Julian could elaborate, his phone flashed with an incoming call from his attorney, Marcus Vance—his cousin and one of the few family members who remained neutral. Julian answered on speaker.

"Julian," Marcus’s voice sounded tense, stripped of its usual casual camaraderie. "I’ve just received a formal notice from your mother’s legal representatives. She is filing an emergency petition for temporary custody of Leo."

Evelyn gasped, dropping her spoon, which clattered loudly against the porcelain. Julian’s hand gripped the edge of the table so hard his knuckles turned white. "On what grounds?"

"Child endangerment and psychological instability of the mother," Marcus read from a document. "She’s citing Evelyn’s medical records from her postpartum recovery, claiming Evelyn is suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and that you are enabling a dangerous environment. Furthermore, she’s utilizing the incident last night—claiming Evelyn attacked her, and that you were forced to intervene to separate them."

"That is a disgusting lie!" Evelyn cried out, tears spilling over her lashes. "She attacked me! Julian saw it!"

"Julian’s testimony will be viewed as biased by a family court judge if Eleanor presents a curated narrative first," Marcus explained grimly. "She’s already lined up two private psychiatrists who are prepared to testify based on 'affidavits' of your behavior provided by former staff members whom Eleanor paid off weeks ago. She’s been planning a contingency like this for a while, Julian. She wants the heir to the Vance legacy under her roof, where she can mold him."

Julian closed his eyes, calculating the variables. Eleanor was sacrificing the immediate peace of the family to secure long-term control over the next generation. The emotional cost to Evelyn was catastrophic. The strategic counter-move had to be absolute.

"Marcus," Julian said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "The nursery has a hidden, cloud-synced security camera disguised as a carbon monoxide detector. I installed it last month after the nanny complained about the mansion's old wiring."

A heavy silence fell over the line. "Does Eleanor know about it?" Marcus asked.

"No," Julian replied, looking directly at Evelyn, offering her a grim, reassuring nod. "And it recorded every single second of her pulling my wife by her hair and throwing her to the ground. Let her file the petition. We are going to let her walk right into the trap."
