Chapter 6 - A Place to Belong

Six months later.
The morning sun poured through the high windows of the 111 Murray Street penthouse, lighting up the space in warm, golden hues. The cold marble that once felt like a museum was now filled with life. Colorful children's books rested on the glass tables, framed family photos lined the hallway, and the smell of fresh pancakes floated from the kitchen.
Cameron stood near the kitchen island, laughing as she flipped a pancake. Her mother, now fully in remission and looking healthy and vibrant, was sitting at the table, sipping coffee and chatting happily with Frank.
From down the hallway, the sound of tiny footsteps thundered toward the kitchen.
"Cammy! Look!"
Four-year-old Leo came running into the room, wearing a tiny dark suit that matched his father’s perfectly. He was holding a large white velvet box in his hands.
"What do you have there, sweet boy?" Cameron asked, crouching down to his level.
Behind Leo walked Matteo, wearing a sharp black tuxedo, looking more handsome than ever, his gray eyes filled with a warmth that no businessman in New York would ever recognize.
Leo held out the white box to Cameron. "Daddy said I give you this!"
Cameron looked up at Matteo, her heart hammering against her ribs.
Matteo walked over, kneeling on the floor beside his son. He gently took the box from Leo’s hands and opened it. Inside rested a breathtaking, flawless emerald diamond ring that matched the color of the dress she had worn the night their lives changed forever.
"Cameron," Matteo spoke, his voice deep, rough with emotion. "Six months ago, this house was a cold, empty prison. My son was drowning in grief, and I was consumed by dark vengeance. You stepped off that service elevator with a cleaning caddy and brought light, love, and healing into our lives."
Tears welled in Cameron’s eyes as she looked at the man she loved.
"You taught my son how to feel safe again," Matteo continued, taking her trembling hand into his. "And you taught me how to love again. I don't want you to be our nanny, Cameron. I want you to be my wife. I want you to be Leo’s mother. I want to spend every single day of my life making you happy."
Little Leo looked at Cameron with big, hopeful eyes. "Say yes, Cammy! Please?"
Cameron burst into tears of pure joy, throwing her arms around Matteo’s neck. "Yes! Yes, of course, yes!"
Matteo lifted her into his arms, kissing her with deep, unbridled passion as Leo cheered and jumped up and down, clapping his hands happily. Cameron’s mother wiped tears of joy from her eyes as Frank smiled broadly in the background.
Matteo slid the brilliant ring onto her finger, sealing a promise that had begun on a cold marble floor with a broken wooden train.
One year later, the same grand penthouse echoed with the sweet sound of baby giggles.
On the plush living room rug, Cameron sat holding a newborn baby girl with dark hair and bright hazel eyes—little Clara, named in honor of the past they had healed from.
Beside her, Leo was proudly showing his baby sister how to play with a soft stuffed bear, his face full of gentle love.
Matteo walked into the room, setting down two cups of coffee. He sat down on the floor beside Cameron, wrapping his strong arm around her waist and pulling her close against his side. He kissed her forehead, then leaned down to kiss his newborn daughter, watching his son play happily.
"Are you happy, Mrs. Duca?" Matteo whispered into her ear, his voice full of profound peace.
Cameron rested her head against his shoulder, looking out at the sunlit Manhattan skyline, feeling the warmth of the family they had built together from the ashes of grief.

"I am home," Cameron replied softly.
And in the penthouse at 111 Murray Street, love reigned supreme.
