Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Glass House

Moving into the penthouse felt like entering a different universe.
Cameron was given a private suite on the second floor of the duplex—a room larger than her entire family apartment in Queens, complete with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Manhattan skyline.
Her first week was a whirlwind. Leo was far from "cured." He still had sudden moments of fury, throwing juice boxes across the kitchen or tearing pages out of books. But Cameron never yelled. When he lashed out, she sat on the floor, created a safe boundary, and stayed present until the storm inside him passed.
By day five, Leo was no longer throwing things at her. He was holding her hand as they walked through the penthouse, dragging her to show her his favorite drawing books.
However, the penthouse was not a peaceful sanctuary. It was a fortress filled with tension.
On Thursday afternoon, while Cameron was helping Leo build a fortress out of sofa cushions in the primary living area, the private elevator chimed.
A tall, striking woman stepped out. She wore a tailored crimson dress, diamonds flashing at her wrists, her blonde hair styled to perfection. It was Vanessa Vance.
Vanessa’s sharp heels clicked loudly against the marble as she walked in, flanked by two assistant-like figures carrying designer bags.
"Leo, darling!" Vanessa called out in an exaggerated, sugary tone.
Leo instantly stiffened. The joyful smile on his face vanished, replaced by the dark, fearful scowl Cameron had seen on her first day. He ducked behind Cameron’s legs, clinging tightly to her jeans.
Vanessa stopped, her eyes raking over Cameron with absolute contempt.
"Who on earth are you?" Vanessa demanded, looking at Cameron’s simple sweater and jeans. "Where is the new nanny? And why is my nephew hiding behind the staff?"
"I am Cameron Jenkins, Leo’s nanny," Cameron replied calmly, placing a protective hand on Leo’s head.
Vanessa let out a bitter laugh. "A nanny? You look like you just walked off a bus from the Midwest. Where is Matteo?"
"Mr. Duca is in a private meeting in his study," Cameron answered. "And Leo is currently playing. We’d appreciate it if you didn't raise your voice."
Vanessa’s eyes flared with anger. She took three swift steps toward Cameron, pointing a manicured nail at her chest. "Listen to me, girl. You don't tell me what to do in this house. I am Clara’s sister. I am practically this boy’s mother! Leo, come here to Auntie right now!"
She reached out to grab Leo’s arm.
Instinctively, Cameron stepped in front of her, blocking Vanessa’s hand. "Do not touch him when he is clearly distressed, Miss Vance."
"How dare you!" Vanessa shrieked. "I will have you fired and thrown out on the street within five minutes!"
"Is there a problem here?"
A deep, commanding voice sliced through the air. Matteo stood at the end of the hallway, wearing a crisp dark suit, his expression terrifyingly cold.
Vanessa’s aggressive demeanor flipped instantly. She put on a tragic, fragile smile, her eyes welling with artificial tears as she turned to Matteo.
"Oh, Matteo, thank goodness!" Vanessa cried, moving toward him. "This... this uncouth woman you hired just pushed me! She’s keeping Leo away from me! She’s filling his head with strange ideas! You need to terminate her immediately!"
Matteo didn't even look at Vanessa. His dark eyes remained fixed entirely on Cameron, who stood her ground, holding Leo securely in her arms.
"Did she push you, Cameron?" Matteo asked quietly.
"No, Mr. Duca," Cameron said steadily. "Miss Vance attempted to physically pull Leo against his will while he was clearly frightened. I placed myself between them to maintain his safety."
Vanessa gasped. "She’s lying! Matteo, I’m family! You’re going to take the word of a hired servant over mine?"
Matteo walked slowly over to them. The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. He stopped inches from Vanessa.
"Cameron is the head of Leo’s care," Matteo said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "If she says you are distressing my son, then you are distressing my son."
Vanessa’s face turned white. "Matteo... how can you say that? After everything I’ve done for you? After Clara passed—"
"Do not use my late wife’s name to justify your arrogance," Matteo cut her off coldly. "Frank will escort you to the elevator. Do not come back without my explicit invitation."
"You’ll regret this, Matteo!" Vanessa spat, her mask slipping completely into pure rage. "My father still controls twenty percent of Duca Enterprises' voting stock! You can't treat me like this!"
As Frank escorted a furious Vanessa into the elevator, Cameron released a breath she hadn't realized she was holding.
Matteo turned to her. He looked at Leo, who was peek-a-boo watching his father from behind Cameron’s waist.
"You stood up to her," Matteo noted, a strange spark in his dark eyes.
"I promised to protect him," Cameron said simple. "That includes protecting him from people who use him as a trophy."
Matteo stared at her for a long, silent moment. For the first time, Cameron noticed a tiny crack in his impenetrable armor—a look of profound exhaustion and buried grief.

"Thank you," Matteo said softly.
It was the first time he had ever said those words to anyone in that house.
