Chapter 5 - The Gala of Traps

Three days later, the annual Duca Enterprise Charity Gala was held at the Plaza Hotel. It was the biggest social event of the year in New York City, attended by elite politicians, foreign dignitaries, and billionaire investors.
Matteo had insisted that Cameron attend. He had ordered a custom emerald-green silk dress for her, paired with simple diamond earrings. When she stepped out of her suite that evening, looking like a vision of pure elegance, Matteo felt his heart skip a beat.
"You look stunning," he whispered, kissing her knuckles.
Leo was staying at the penthouse under the heavy protection of Frank and six armed guards. Matteo was taking no chances.
When they arrived at the Plaza Hotel, the red carpet exploded with flashing cameras. The press went wild seeing Matteo Duca—the notorious, cold billionaire widower—arriving with a gorgeous, unknown woman on his arm.
As they entered the grand ballroom, heads turned. Whispers echoed across the room.
"Is that his son's nanny?"
"She was a maid a month ago!"
"How disgraceful!"
Cameron kept her head held high, her hand tucked securely into Matteo’s arm. Matteo sneered at the whispering crowd, his physical presence warning anyone against saying a word too loud.
Suddenly, Richard Vance—Clara and Vanessa’s father—stepped out of the crowd, blocking their path. He was an older, arrogant man with silver hair and a bitter sneer. Beside him stood Vanessa, looking radiant in a shimmering silver dress, her eyes full of venom.
"Matteo," Richard said loudly, ensuring the surrounding reporters could hear. "I see you brought your domestic help to an elite gala. How low the Duca name has fallen."
Matteo’s expression remained stone cold. "Richard. I’m surprised you’re here. I assumed you’d be busy liquidating your assets before the SEC freezes your accounts tomorrow morning."
Richard’s face flushed red. "You bluffing bastard! You think you can ruin my family over a servant girl?"
Vanessa stepped forward, pointing a dramatic finger at Cameron. "She’s a thief, Matteo! Check her evening bag! We have proof that she’s been stealing valuable jewelry from Clara’s safe in the penthouse!"
The ballroom went deathly quiet. Guests pulled out their phones, filming the scene.
"That's a lie!" Cameron said firmly, her voice echoing clearly. "I have never touched anything in Clara's safe!"
"Search her bag!" Vanessa demanded, signaling to two security guards working the hotel floor. "Search it right now!"
Before the guards could step forward, Matteo moved with terrifying speed. He grabbed Richard Vance by his collar, dragging the older man close, his voice dangerously low.
"If anyone puts a hand on her, Richard, I will publish the offshore banking records of Vance Global right here on the projection screens in front of every reporter in this room."
Richard paled instantly. "What... what records?"
"The ones Clara died trying to hide," Matteo hissed. "I have them all. The SEC has them. The FBI has them. Your empire is over."
Just then, the heavy glass doors of the ballroom burst open!
Federal agents in dark blue vests bearing the letters FBI streamed into the room, led by a lead investigator holding a stack of federal arrest warrants.
"Richard Vance! Vanessa Vance!" the investigator announced over a megaphone. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit murder in the death of Clara Duca!"
Gasps echoed across the ballroom! Cameras flashed furiously as federal agents moved in, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto Richard and Vanessa’s wrists.
"No! This is a mistake! Matteo, help us!" Vanessa screamed as she was dragged away down the red carpet, her glamorous mask completely shattered. "Matteo!"
Matteo watched them go without a shred of pity in his eyes. Justice had finally been served.

He turned back to Cameron, pulling her into his arms right in front of all the flashing cameras and shocked high-society guests.
"It's over," Matteo whispered, kissing her deeply on the lips as the press cameras snapped hundreds of photos, capturing the moment the ruthless billionaire claimed the woman who had saved his soul.
