Chapter 2: The Midnight Eviction

Chapter 2: The Midnight Eviction
Eleanor Vance did not wait until sunrise. She was a woman of venomous efficiency.
At 2:00 AM, the heavy lights of the mansion's courtyard suddenly flashed on. The sound of heavy footsteps echoed through the grand hallways. Julian and Clara, who were sitting on the edge of the nursery bed trying to soothe a restless Lily, looked up as the door was pushed open.
It wasn't Eleanor. It was Arthur, the head of the family’s private security detail, flanked by three large men in black suits. Arthur looked uncomfortable, his eyes cast downward.
"Mr. Julian... I am deeply sorry," Arthur stammered, holding a printed document. "Madam Eleanor has revoked your access to the estate. The security codes have been changed. We have orders to escort you, Mrs. Clara, and the child off the property immediately."
"It's two in the morning!" Julian roared, slamming his fist against the wall. "My daughter is an infant!"
"Madam Eleanor stated that if you do not leave within ten minutes, we are to call the police for criminal trespassing," Arthur whispered. "She has already frozen your corporate credit cards and suspended your vehicle leases."
Clara looked around the luxurious nursery—the custom-carved wooden crib, the silk drapes, the imported toys. It had all been a beautiful cage. She looked at Julian, seeing the raw agony and humiliation in her husband's eyes. He had lived a life of supreme privilege, and his mother was trying to break his spirit by reducing him to nothing.
Clara stood up, holding Lily tightly in a warm blanket. She placed a hand on Julian’s trembling shoulder.

"Julian, look at me," Clara said, her voice stronger than it had been in months. "We don't need this house. We don't need her money. We have Lily, and we have each other. Let's go."
Julian looked into Clara’s eyes, finding a reservoir of strength he didn't know she possessed. He nodded slowly. Packing only a single diaper bag and a backpack of essentials, the small family walked out into the cold midnight air, the heavy iron gates of the Vance estate slamming shut behind them.
