Chapter 1: The Line in the Sand
"Julian..." Eleanor gasped, clutching her shoulder where her son had shoved her. "You... you dared to put your hands on your own mother? For her? For this penniless peasant?!"
Julian didn't answer his mother with words. His chest heaved as he knelt down beside his sobbing wife, Clara. Her face was pale, and several strands of her hair were scattered across the floor from Eleanor's brutal grip. With trembling, fiercely protective hands, Julian lifted Clara into his arms, pulling her close against his chest.
"I am going to say this exactly once, Mother," Julian said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, deadly calm whisper that vibrated with pure malice. "If you ever touch my wife again, if you ever breathe the same air as my daughter, I will forget that we share the same blood. I will erase you from my life so completely you will wonder if you ever had a son."
Clara buried her face into the crook of Julian’s neck, her entire body shaking with violent sobs. Just inches away, the sudden commotion caused their four-month-old baby girl, Lily, to stir in her crib. She let out a small, frightened whimper.
Hearing her baby cry broke the trance of terror holding Clara. She scrambled out of Julian’s grip and reached into the crib, pulling Lily tightly against her chest. The baby’s white onesie bore a faint smudge of dirt from where Eleanor had dragged Clara across the floor.
"Get out," Julian ordered, standing up and stepping between his mother and his family.

Eleanor stood up, smoothing down her designer Chanel jacket, her shock quickly morphing back into poisonous arrogance. "You think you can survive without the Vance empire, Julian? This mansion, your position at the firm, the trust funds—everything belongs to me. You choose that street-trash girl, and I will strip you of every luxury you have ever known by sunrise!"
Julian let out a cold, hollow laugh. "Keep the money, Eleanor. It smells like rot anyway. Get out of my sight before I call the police and have you dragged out in handcuffs for domestic assault."
