Chapter 2 - Poison in the Shadows

The atmosphere in the Villaseñor mansion shifted overnight, but the peace was short-lived.
By noon, Paulina had stormed out of the house in a rage, throwing glass vases and threatening to destroy Diego’s financial empire. But Diego didn't care about the board meetings or the falling stock prices. For the first time in four years, he spent the entire afternoon in the bright garden, sitting on the grass with Valentina.
He watched her play with her worn-out stuffed rabbit, his heart aching with lost time. He learned that her favorite color was pink, that she liked warm milk before sleep, and that she was terrified of thunder. Every detail was a precious gem he gathered eagerly.
"Marisol," Diego said softly, stepping into the kitchen that evening where Marisol was nervously stirring a pot of soup.
She jumped, nearly dropping her spoon. "Mr. Villaseñor..."
"Stop calling me that," Diego interrupted gently, walking up to her. "I am the same Diego who used to share cheap tacos with you on the bench in Guadalajara. I am the man who loved you."
Marisol lowered her gaze, her heart racing. "Everything has changed, Diego. You are a billionaire now. You live in a world of galas, contracts, and high society. I am just a woman who washes your dishes."
"You are the mother of my child," Diego said firmly, taking her hand. Her skin was rough from hard labor, and it broke his heart to realize how much she had suffered while he lived in luxury. "And if you will let me, I want to make up for every single day I missed."
Before Marisol could answer, the heavy front door slammed open downstairs. Footsteps echoed toward the dining room.
A sharp, authoritative woman in her late fifties stepped into the kitchen, accompanied by two men in black suits. It was Victoria Villaseñor—Diego’s aunt, dressed in an immaculate Chanel suit, her face set like stone. Behind her walked Paulina, her red eyes burning with malice.
"What is the meaning of this scandal, Diego?" Victoria demanded, her voice cutting through the room like a whip. "Paulina called me in tears! You threw your fiancée out for a servant girl?"
Diego stepped in front of Marisol, shielding her instantly. "Aunt Victoria. You have a lot of nerve showing your face in my home after what you did four years ago."
Victoria’s eyes flickered with a brief flash of anxiety, but she quickly covered it with a cold sneer. "I did what was necessary to protect the Villaseñor name! Look at you, letting a deceitful maid manipulate you with a fake child!"
"She is not fake!" Diego roared, his composure snapping. "Valentina is my daughter!"
"Prove it!" Victoria snapped, crossing her arms. "A maid’s word means nothing in court. If you try to acknowledge this child publicly, the board of directors will declare you unfit to manage the family estate due to emotional instability. Paulina’s father is already pulling his investments!"
"Let them pull out," Diego said coldly. "I don't care."
"You will care when you’re ruined!" Paulina chimed in, stepping forward with a cruel smile. "And don't think you can just keep this child here peacefully, Diego. We will drag Marisol’s name through the mud. We’ll leak stories to the press saying she trapped you! We’ll make sure she’s investigated for child neglect!"
"Get out!" Diego shouted, pointing toward the door. "Both of you! Get out of my house before I have my security team throw you into the street!"
Victoria smirked, turning on her heel. "Enjoy your little domestic fantasy while it lasts, Diego. But remember... a Villaseñor never loses."
As the women left, Marisol collapsed onto a chair, shaking violently. "Diego, they’re going to ruin you! Victoria has power in this city! She knows judges, politicians..."
"Let her try," Diego said, kneeling beside Marisol and taking her cold hands in his. "I lost you once because I was young and weak. I will burn my entire empire to the ground before I let them touch you or Valentina again."

Unbeknownst to them, outside the mansion gate, Paulina pulled out her phone and made a call to a private investigator.
"I need you to find everything on Marisol," Paulina whispered venomously into the receiver. "Her past, her relatives, anything. And if there isn't any dirt... make some up."
