Chapter 5 - The Reckoning in Court

Three months later.
The County Superior Courthouse was packed with local reporters and spectators. The "Vance Family Poisoning Case" had gripped the state, revealing the dark underbelly of a wealthy suburban family willing to destroy their own blood for financial greed.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, holding Emily’s hand. She looked radiant—strong, healed, and restored. Noah was three months old now, a chubby, healthy baby boy with big blue eyes, giggling quietly in his stroller beside us.
At the defense table sat Evelyn Vance and Chloe Vance, dressed in orange prison jumpsuits. Evelyn looked hollowed out; her pristine hair was gray and messy, her arrogant posture gone. Chloe sat beside her, staring blankly at the table, stripped of all her former defiance.
The judge slammed his gavel down, bringing the courtroom to absolute order.
"In the matter of the State v. Evelyn Vance and Chloe Vance," the judge announced, his voice echoing off the mahogany walls. "The defendants have been found guilty on all counts: Attempted First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Child Abuse, Financial Fraud, and Conspiracy."
The prosecutor stood up to read our victim impact statement, but Emily gently touched his arm.
"I want to speak," Emily said softly.
I looked at her with admiration. She stood up, taking the microphone at the podium, looking directly at the two women who had tried to end her life.
"Evelyn, Chloe," Emily spoke, her voice clear and unwavering. "You thought because I came from nothing, I was weak. You thought you could strip away my dignity, my child, and my life to satisfy your greed. But love is stronger than malice. You tried to break my family, but you only succeeded in destroying yourselves."
Evelyn turned her head away, unable to meet Emily's steady gaze. Chloe buried her face in her hands, weeping silently.
"Your Honor," Emily continued, turning to the judge. "We ask for no leniency. We ask for justice."
The judge nodded solemnly. "Evelyn Vance, for your leading role in this cruel conspiracy, I sentence you to thirty-five years in state prison without the possibility of parole until you serve at least thirty years. Chloe Vance, for your direct participation, I sentence you to twenty-two years."
Gavel slammed down. BANG.
Screams erupted from the defense table as court officers moved in to lead Evelyn and Chloe away. Evelyn looked back at me one last time, her lips trembling, whispering, "Ethan... please..."

I looked back at her with complete neutrality. She was no longer my mother. She was just a stranger paying the price for her own wickedness.
As they were dragged out through the rear doors, a heavy burden that had weighed on my shoulders for months finally lifted completely.
