Chapter 3 - The Web of Deception

The next morning brought no peace. While Noah’s fever had finally broken, his blood tests revealed severe jaundice and dehydration that required extended hospital care. Emily remained weak, fighting off the lingering effects of the sedatives and a rising infection from her neglected C-section wound.

At 9:00 AM, my phone rang. It was an unknown number.

"Ethan?" A deep, unfamiliar voice spoke on the line. "My name is Marcus Reed. I’m a private investigator. Your wife hired me three weeks ago."

I froze. "Emily hired a private investigator? Why?"

"She suspected your mother was meddling in your personal finances and forged your signature on several property transfer documents," Reed explained. "She was gathering evidence to protect you. But three days ago, she suddenly stopped responding to my calls."

My heart pounded. "Emily found out about the fraud before I left for my trip?"

"Yes. And she had proof," Reed said softly. "Ethan, your mother didn't just want custody of Noah. She took out a two-million-dollar life insurance policy on Emily three months ago, listing herself as the primary beneficiary."

The ground beneath me felt like it opened up. A life insurance policy? Evelyn wasn't just trying to deem Emily unfit—she was planning to let Emily die from postoperative infection while keeping her sedated!

"Where is the proof?" I demanded, my hands trembling violently.

"Emily hid the flash drive containing the forged signatures and insurance documents inside your house," Reed said. "Specifically, in the nursery. But you need to be careful, Ethan. Your sister Chloe was released on bail two hours ago—her lawyer managed to claim she was just a bystander. She might be at your house right now trying to destroy the evidence."

"I'm on my way," I said, hanging up instantly.

I told the hospital security team to place double guards outside Emily and Noah’s room, authorizing no visitors without my explicit written consent. Then, I sped toward my mother’s house—the house where I had grown up, now transformed into a house of horrors.

When I pulled into the driveway, I noticed Chloe’s red sedan parked near the garage. The front door was unlocked.

I pushed the door open quietly, stepping into the dim living room. The air was heavy with the smell of old bleach and stale food. As I walked silently down the hallway toward the nursery, I heard the sound of drawers being pulled open and furniture being moved.

I paused at the nursery doorway. Chloe was on her knees, ripping apart the baby’s crib mattress with a box cutter, her eyes frantic, hair disheveled.

"Looking for this?" I said, standing in the doorway holding up a small silver flash drive I had retrieved from under the floorboard beneath the rocking chair—a hiding spot Emily and I had agreed to use for spare house keys months ago.

Chloe whipped around, dropping the box cutter, her face turning ghost-white. "Ethan! What are you doing here?"

"You and Mom tried to kill my wife, Chloe," I said, my voice dangerously low. "A two-million-dollar insurance policy? Is that what Emily was worth to you?"

Chloe scrambled to her feet, her expression shifting from terror to venomous hatred. "She took everything from us! Dad loved her more than his own daughter! He left the lake house to her, Ethan! To HER! Mom spent her entire life building this family, and you gave it away to some orphan with no background!"

"Dad left her the lake house because he knew you and Mom would sell it off to cover your gambling debts!" I yelled. "I saw Mom’s bank statements! She lost half a million dollars in illegal offshore casinos last year!"

Chloe took a step toward me, her eyes wild. "Give me that flash drive, Ethan. If you hand that over to the police, Mom goes to prison for fifteen years! I go to prison! Do you really want to destroy your own family for that woman?"

"You destroyed this family the moment you put sedatives in Emily’s food," I said, backing toward the hallway. "You’re not my sister anymore."

"I won't let you leave with that!" Chloe screamed, lunging at me with the box cutter outstretched!
