Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

The confrontation in the hospital lobby escalated rapidly. Chloe stepped forward, holding her phone out toward Officer Ramirez.

"Look at these text messages!" Chloe demanded, her voice sharp and rehearsed. "Emily sent these to me two days ago! She said she regretted having the baby, that she couldn't take care of Noah, and that she wanted to give him up for adoption!"

Officer Ramirez took the phone, squinting at the screen. I stepped closer to look. The messages were indeed sent from Emily’s number.

“I can’t do this anymore, Chloe. I don’t want this baby. Keep Ethan away from me or I’ll leave,” one message read.

My heart hammered against my ribs. "Emily never wrote this. Emily loved Noah from the second she knew she was pregnant! She spent months painting the nursery!"

"She was faking it, Ethan!" Evelyn cried, wiping away nonexistent tears. "She wanted your money, your estate! When she realized you were working late nights and not giving her full access to your trust fund, she snapped! We tried to give her medicine to calm her down, but she took too much on purpose!"

"Wait," Officer Ramirez interrupted, his eyes narrowing as he caught Evelyn's slip. "You just said she took random pills on her own. Now you’re saying you gave her medicine?"

Evelyn’s face flushed red, realizing her mistake. "I—I meant we offered her herbal tea! She must have slipped her own pills into it!"

"Dr. Bennett’s report states the sedatives were crushed and mixed into liquid food," Dr. Bennett chimed in coldly. "It wasn't an accidental overdose. It was administered systematically over forty-eight hours."

While Ramirez began questioning Evelyn and Chloe in a side room, a nurse called me back into the ICU. Emily’s eyelids were fluttering.

I rushed to her bedside, grabbing her trembling hand. "Emily? Honey, can you hear me?"

Her eyes opened slowly, unfocused and bloodshot. She looked around in terror before her gaze settled on me. Tears spilled over her pale cheeks.

"Ethan..." she croaked, her voice barely a whisper. "Noah... where is Noah?"

"He’s right here, baby. He’s safe. The doctors are taking care of him," I sobbed, kissing her cold forehead. "What happened, Emily? Please tell me."

Emily pulled me closer, her body shaking with silent sobs. "They... they locked me in the room, Ethan. Your mother... she took my phone on the first night. Every time I tried to get up to feed Noah, Chloe would bring me soup... it made me so sleepy... I couldn't move my arms..."

"Why, Emily? Why did they do this?"

"The legal papers..." Emily choked out, her breathing growing ragged. "Your mother brought papers... she wanted me to sign away my parental rights to Noah... and sign a waiver giving up any claim to your inheritance if we divorced. When I refused... she took Noah away into the other room... and left me in the dark..."

A cold realization swept over me like ice water.

Six months ago, my father passed away, leaving a substantial portion of the family real estate portfolio in my name, with a clause that upon my death or incapacity, full guardianship and asset control would pass to my wife and children. My mother had fought bitterly against my father’s will, claiming that a "stranger" like Emily shouldn't control the Vance legacy.

Evelyn didn't just dislike Emily—she wanted to erase her. By drugging Emily, withholding food from Noah, and forging texts, Evelyn and Chloe were setting the stage to declare Emily an unfit, abusive mother. If Emily ended up in a psychiatric ward—or worse, died from medical complications—Evelyn would gain full custody of Noah and control over the family estate.

"They ruined my baby, Ethan..." Emily wept, her hands clutching my shirt. "They let him starve..."

"They will pay for this," I swore through gritted teeth. "I promise you, Emily. They will never touch you or Noah again."

I stepped out of the room, my hands shaking with absolute rage. I walked back toward Officer Ramirez, who was finishing his preliminary notes with my mother and sister. Evelyn was still acting distressed, trying to convince the officer that I was being manipulated.

"Officer Ramirez," I said loudly, attracting the attention of the entire waiting room. "I want to file formal charges for attempted murder, child abuse, and unlawful confinement against Evelyn Vance and Chloe Vance."

Evelyn snapped around, her face twisting into a mask of pure fury. "Ethan! How dare you speak to your mother like that! You ungrateful brat! We did everything for you!"

"You poisoned my wife!" I shouted. "You locked her in a room and let my seven-day-old son starve! You wanted the money, didn't you? You couldn't stand that Dad left the assets to my family instead of you!"

"That money belongs to the Vance family!" Chloe shrieked, dropping all pretense of innocence. "Not to some low-class girl you brought home! She didn't deserve any of it!"

"That's enough," Officer Ramirez declared, signaling to another officer. "Mrs. Vance, Miss Vance, we are taking you both to the station for questioning regarding domestic abuse and intentional endangerment."

"You can't arrest me!" Evelyn yelled as the cuffs were placed around her wrists. "Ethan, you will regret this! You’ll crawl back to me on your knees when you realize what she really is!"

As my mother and sister were led away in handcuffs, screaming threats through the hospital corridors, I collapsed onto a bench, burying my face in my hands. The battle had just begun, but at least my family was safe for tonight. Or so I thought.
