Chapter 4 - The Fortress and the Father

The Duca compound on the North Shore of Massachusetts was a massive, sprawling estate overlooking the icy Atlantic Ocean. Surrounded by wrought-iron gates, security cameras, and armed patrols, it looked more like a private fortress than a residence.
When the heavy iron gates slid shut behind the convoy, Emily let out a long, shuddering breath she felt like she had been holding for hours.
Anthony guided them inside through the grand foyer. High ceilings, warm hardwood floors, sweeping staircases, and glowing fireplaces greeted them. Despite its massive size, the house was immaculate—and entirely empty of the criminal element Emily had feared.
"Frankie," Anthony instructed as his security chief walked in behind them. "Set up a three-man rotation on the perimeter. Double the guards at the main gate. Nobody enters or leaves without my personal approval."
"Got it, Boss," Frankie nodded respectfully, eyeing Emily and Noah with quiet realization before slipping out to execute the orders.
Anthony turned to Emily. "I had the master suite in the east wing prepared for you and Noah. It has its own bathroom, a fireplace, and a private balcony. You'll be comfortable there."
"Thank you, Anthony," Emily said quietly, her tone softening as she realized how much care he was taking to ensure their comfort.
Noah, who had woken up fully upon entering the grand mansion, was staring around the foyer with wide, amazed eyes. "Whoa... is this a castle?"
Anthony couldn't help the small smile that broke across his face. "Something like that."
"Are you a king?" Noah asked, looking up at him with genuine curiosity.
Anthony dropped to one knee, bringing himself level with the boy's height. "No, Noah. I'm just the man who takes care of this place." He hesitated, his heart pounding in his chest. "How about I show you the kitchen? I think there's some ice cream in the freezer, even if it's winter."
Noah's eyes lit up instantly. "Chocolate?"
"The best chocolate in Boston," Anthony promised.
Emily watched from the doorway of the kitchen as Anthony sat at the marble island counter with Noah. The grand mafia boss—the man feared by corrupt politicians and criminal capos across New England—was carefully scooping chocolate ice cream into a glass bowl, handing a small silver spoon to the little boy.
"My Mom says I can't have sugar before bed," Noah whispered conspiratorially, leaning over the counter.
"Well," Anthony leaned in, whispering back with a wink, "what happens in the kitchen on Christmas Eve stays in the kitchen."
Noah giggled—a bright, ringing sound that filled the grand, quiet house with life.
As Noah happily ate his ice cream, he pointed to a large framed photograph hanging on the kitchen wall. It showed a younger Anthony standing beside an older man with silver hair and warm, stern eyes.
"Who's that?" Noah asked.
"That was my father," Anthony said softly, his eyes reflecting a deep wave of nostalgia. "His name was Vito."
"Did he teach you how to fix stars?"
Anthony chuckled quietly. "He taught me a lot of things, Noah. Some good, some bad. But he always told me that family is the only thing in this world worth fighting for."
Noah looked at Anthony, his small brow furrowing as he studied the man's face. "My Mom doesn't talk about my dad much. She said he went away before I was born."
Anthony felt a lump form in his throat. He looked over at Emily, who was leaning against the doorframe, her eyes filled with unshed tears.
"Your dad wanted to be here, Noah," Anthony said, his voice thick with emotion. "He made a lot of mistakes, and he hurt your mom very much. But there wasn't a single day... not one single second... that he didn't love you."
Noah swallowed his ice cream, looking thoughtful. "How do you know that?"
Anthony took a deep breath, reaching out to gently touch Noah's small shoulder. "Because I'm your dad, Noah."
The room went completely silent except for the crackle of the fireplace in the adjoining room.
Noah stared at Anthony, his blue-gray eyes blinking slowly as he processed the words. He looked at Anthony's eyes, then down at his own small hands, then at Emily standing by the door.
Emily walked over quietly, placing her hand on Noah's other shoulder. "It's true, sweetheart," she whispered gently. "This is Anthony. Your father."
Noah looked back at Anthony, his little face solemn. "Is that why you have my eyes?"
May you like
"No, Noah," Anthony whispered, tears finally escaping his eyes and tracing down his hard cheeks. "You have mine."
Without another word, Noah leaned forward over the marble counter and wrapped his small arms around Anthony's neck. Anthony pulled his son into his massive chest, burying his face in the boy's dark curls, holding him tight as if he would never let go.
